i buy them from waitrose, purely for a novelty value
i did half catch a jeremy vine radio discussion about them but didnt learn much.

is it just waitrose? or are they making a come back
i know in some respect they are aesthetically pleasing > but didnt they go out of fashion in the 70s?

Double yolk eggs come from young hens who haven't quite got the hang of all that laying business, yet. They're most common at this time of year. Most likely to be found in a box of extra large eggs

I lived in a flat on a farm, after I left my ex. Often had chickens around my front door. And I often came home to fond a margarine tub full of eggs in my kitchen!

We get beautiful multicoloured eggs from the milkman... white, cream, light brown, dark brown, blue, olive. It’s like Christmas opening a new egg box each week

BeMoreZenLike · 02/05/2020 23:04

I love the blue ones! 💙💙💙

Wincarnis · 02/05/2020 23:05

I am in Western Europe, I get free range eggs from the supermarket, they are always white. I had forgotten about brown eggs until I saw this thread. I’ve never seen blue hen eggs!

Elliemayclampett · 02/05/2020 23:10

Embarrassed now about my trip to Tesco earlier this week when I opened the carton of eggs always do to check for breakage) and they were all white.
I asked the assistant what was wrong with the eggs! He had no clue either..Blush

BertieBotts · 02/05/2020 23:12

I live in Germany and you can buy both here. Frequently there are two boxes of eggs, identical except for colour, and never mixed in the same box. I should ask Germans whether they have a preference.

midwestsummer · 03/05/2020 04:07

Where I am in the USA you can get white and brown eggs, as well as cardboard and plastic egg boxes.
There have been more white eggs during c19 and we were told that was because more catering eggs were being sold through supermarkets.

Megatron · 03/05/2020 04:30

All eggs were white when I was a kid, it was unusual to get brown ones.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 03/05/2020 06:37

I bought a pack of white eggs in Morrison last week. Ds said they tasted better Grin I did notice they very easily cracked maybe because they were fresh I don’t know

Off subject a little I once had a whole 1/2 dozen box of eggs that had double yolks I haven’t seen a double yolk for years (always buy free range)

mathanxiety · 03/05/2020 08:17

White eggs are the cheaper variety in the US, at least where I am. Brown eggs have some sort of cachet that makes them more expensive. Anything organic or free range is more expensive (3 or 4x times moreso). I remember my DCs being fascinated by brown eggs when we were in Ireland.

Mrsmorton · 03/05/2020 09:47

@Elliemayclampett what on earth could have been wrong with them? Confused

Lordfrontpaw · 03/05/2020 09:58

When DS was little I used to have to hunt around for white eggs to dye at Easter.

francienolan · 03/05/2020 20:27

I'm American and every year at Easter the American expat groups go nuts trying to find white eggs to dye (they're very common in supermarkets back home). This year the FB groups were absolutely ecstatic Grin

bloodywhitecat · 03/05/2020 20:36

I have a white hen who lays white eggs, she is a naturally dominant bird. All my other hens (10 of them) laying varying shades of brown eggs, 6 of the brown egg laying hens are ex-commercial layers and I think the reason they are seen as 'aggressive' is because they tend to peck each others feather out in the commercial setting. When we collected our first five rescue hens they had very few feathers but are now a healthy looking bunch.

bloodywhitecat · 03/05/2020 20:39

@EnthusiasmIsDisturbed I would imagine they came from a new flock of hens, hens tend to lay double yolk eggs when they are just starting to lay. Flocks are turned around every 72 weeks as they tend to become less productive, the hens are sent to slaughter (unless a rescue charity gets in first) then new girls are brought in so you get double yolk eggs for a while.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 03/05/2020 22:30

Thank you bwc

Aww I guess not many get rescued but pleased to hear some do Smile

midwestsummer · 03/05/2020 23:07

My dm has rescue hens, there is a thriving rescue and redistribution network.
They often arrive almost bald but turn into happy feathered birds pretty quickly.

Rebelwithallthecause · 04/05/2020 00:51

I only buy white eggs because they are 55p cheaper than the brown ones in my supermarket

The shells are more fragile than brown and I don’t think they taste the same but are still perfectly fine as eggs go

annabell22 · 04/05/2020 05:48

I'm old enough to remember when eggs were routinely white and brown ones were a novelty. I live in the middle east now and all the eggs in the supermarket are white.

santasbabby · 04/05/2020 06:01

I love white eggs

exLtEveDallas · 04/05/2020 07:21

On my last couple of Tesco shops the eggs were almost sold out, with only a few boxes of ‘happy’ eggs and some Tesco boxes. All the Tesco eggs were blue! I’d never seen that before so bought them to surprise DD - her double-take when she open the box was a joy!

hadwebutworldenoughandtime · 04/05/2020 07:31

I got a Tesco delivery yesterday. Two boxes of 15 eggs (one for us and one for my parents) and one box was all brown and one all white. Never seen a white egg before then (in real life) and I am 47!

EricaNernie · 04/05/2020 07:34

oh i love blue eggs

On the subject of double yolks I resorted to XL sized eggs last week as there were no smaller sizes. They were all double yolks.
