Ingrown hairs on legs and epilating advice

I've finally found the motivation to start epilating, literally 13 years after I bought said epilator. It's not been used so it's in decent condition and it's a braun silk epil. Possibly version 1!

It wasn't too bad once I got into it. I wimped out after the first few minutes on the two
other occasions I've used it before. But now I've got big bastard ingrown hairs on the inside of both legs a week later! It's like every other hair is trapped under the skin.

Questions include:

How do I get them 'out'? I've been exfoliating like mad anyway and have now also tried an acid peel! I'm also keeping my legs moisturised to keep the skin soft

How do I avoid them? Maybe I need to change the angle in this area as it happened on both legs. Is it something you have to persevere with but they'll stop happening one day?

Was chuffed to not have to bother with my razor again until this Sad

I could have written this! Same epilator, same previ6use history and same painful result!

This was supposed to be my area of lockdown self improvement Ican!

Can't stop looking and having a poke. Need to put the tweezers down.

They will work their way out. Step away from the tweezers until they are ready.
After a while you get way less hair growth and so way fewer in growing hairs.

I also recommend doing then every week or so. Doing a full leg of full growth really hurts!!

Drink 2 cups of spearmint tea a day, it’ll make the hair grow back slower and less spiky. I used to feel like I had a cactus erupting under the skin in my legs a couple of days after epilating, but the hair seems much softer and I can go longer between epilating sessions now.

Thanks Katz, I'll just keep scrubbing for now! Do you know how long a while is? I could put up with them now for the long term gain of fewer hairs but does that take years to achieve?

Bah humbug my legs have been quite spiky, but less spiky than a day after a shave and they look loads better than usual stubble. Even with the ingrown hairs I don't think anyone else would notice them right now unless they got really close and the torch on their phone on them like me 😁

I don’t epilate but have waxed for years. I exfoliate my legs every day in the shower with one of those puffy things. I only get rare ingrown hairs now.

Thighdentitycrisis · 02/05/2020 10:02

I used to get this problem too. I have a Lumea now

Use tendskin after using it. Probably sting a bit but will definitely prevent ingrown hairs.

skybluee · 02/05/2020 12:02

I'd just leave them alone for a week or so.

I use an electric razor - never thought I'd say this but it's brilliant, zero ingrown hairs. It also means I don't have to shave in the shower, can do it sitting on the floor which is a lot easier.

Anotherthink · 02/05/2020 12:27

I saw tendskin recommended but a lot of the reviews were people who shaved. I'll see if I keep the epilating up before investing I think. Fingers crossed I can get these out in a week it's soooooo tempting to pick at and I'm not even a sporner.

My hair grows really quickly skybluee so this is to try to slow things down. I don't mind giving up an hour every week or two but shaving everyday and being stubbly by the evening is annoying.

OP, I'm the same! Never found the answer. I always start the summer with good intentions but it takes so long to epilate compared to shaving that I give up!

OP - I had the same problem at first and also used to use tweezers to get some of the ingrown hairs out. I got infected hair follicles as a result and had to take a prescription to stop the infection. Let the hair grow out (the ingrown hair) and then it will come out really easily as it does reach the surface of the skin after a while. I still epilate my legs four years after starting and would never go back to shaving. It has reduced the hair growth and doesn't hurt me at all now. I do exfoliate my legs in the shower each day with a puff as part of my routine and I find this helps too (don't start doing it when your skin is sore though).
