2.5 years old not playing with train tracks and just dismantles/crashes in in few seconds

Hi,

I got my son a train track set 2 days ago. He was excited to see the new box and toy but then he doesn't play with it. If I set up the tracks for him he just crashes it or dismantle is saying "london bridge". Referring to London bridge is falling down rhyme. Usually with other toys as well he is more excited about the part of crashing it. Is it normal? I know kids from 2 years old start enjoying playing with train tracks and get really excited with that. Want to know whether someone has experienced something similar.

Yup this sounds normal to me

Polkadotdelight · 01/05/2020 22:47

He's only 2 and a half. This is completely normal.

TheMostHappy · 01/05/2020 22:48

He is associating a game with a rhyme he knows so I would say that is a developmental win. Go with it, he's 2, you're doing great.

Completely normal. My 7 year old still likes playing train crashes.

ChipotleBlessing · 01/05/2020 22:50

Yeah, normal. He’s just not into it at the minute. And if he ever does get into it, quite a lot of the time will be spent creating crashes anyway.

TheMostHappy · 01/05/2020 22:50

And fwiw, my Ds was 2 on Monday and got track master and Thomas trains and just whiiiiiiines incessantly because they fall off and need putting back on again so I think you have a good deal if your Ds likes his London Bridge game. Bless him. Don't worry!!

PippaPegg · 01/05/2020 22:50

Normal

A phase

He will play differently given time to develop and explore.

Haggisfish · 01/05/2020 22:51

Totally normal. I found ds didn’t ‘play’ with things like that and toot toot etc until he was six ish really.

TheMandalorian · 01/05/2020 22:52

Yeh. Multi train pile ups and dismantled bridges for maximum crash-age are all the rage.
However, enjoy setting up some beautiful track systems before they insist on doing it all wrong by themselves. Or even worse ask you to make a spiral with lots of bridges which they then keep tripping over.

TheMandalorian · 01/05/2020 22:54

Being less flippant sometimes you need to show them how to play nicely and get a bit tough on refusing to join in with destructive play.

psha1603 · 01/05/2020 22:56

Thanks. That's helpful to know that it's normal. He does try to build it to his capabilities putting few tracks pieces together but obviously then crashes that too. But good to know that this is normal :)

Sounds like he's having great fun with the toy - that's a win!

No point trying to make toddlers have fun your way. Mine would probably think what I'm doing right now (MN) is boring, he's probably thinking "why on earth is she just looking at that phone when she could be smashing it".

Cruddles · 01/05/2020 23:02

My now 3.5 yr old son loves his train set and has done for a while, plays with it properly. But just today we were playing Duplo and all he wanted to do was build walls that could be knocked down. So I'd say your son is fine

Mairay · 01/05/2020 23:03

Perfectly normal, maybe he would enjoy wooden building blocks? Or lego, so he can build up and knock down Smile

psha1603 · 01/05/2020 23:05

@Cruddles my son does London bridge with Duplo too.But I would say with Duplo he plays better than the train set.

Cruddles · 01/05/2020 23:19

There you go, my son has shown little interest in Duplo except to build towers and walls with no imagination. But he's all over the train set. So they have their strengths, i wouldn't worry

FromTheAllotment · 01/05/2020 23:20

Try modelling what you want him to do, eg drive the train through a station, do station announcements voices, etc.

Although tbh it’ll take a fair bit of repetition before he picks it up too. And then he’ll make you do it again and again and again until you’re utterly utterly sick of it. So... yeah just try and have fun really Grin

Or buy him this, it was my 4yo’s absolute favourite birthday present!!

My daughter loves creating disaster scenarios (mostly so she can play an overly dramatic "rescue" game with her farm animals piloting the rescue helicopter)
