Does hearing Honey make it toxic?

Ranguski · 01/05/2020 20:26

I needed to make a syrup to pour over a cake and added some honey to the mix. I suddenly remembered someone mentioning to me that cooing honey turns it toxic..is this true?

No it is fine

IrritableBitchSyndrome · 01/05/2020 20:28

No.

CampingCake · 01/05/2020 20:29

No it most certainly is not toxic.

Ranguski · 01/05/2020 20:32

Phew... I was kicking myself... wonder where/ why I heard it as such. Has anyone else come across this?

No. Honey is not for under 1's perhaps this is what you're thinking of

Esssa · 01/05/2020 20:35

If it was I'd have died long ago as I warm it up when it crystallises in the bottom of the jar instead of being runny.

ButterflyWitch · 01/05/2020 20:36

Are you thinking of botulism from contaminated honey?

Ranguski · 01/05/2020 20:38

No not botulism..I think it was a work colleague who said never to cook/heat honey as it turns it toxic. I didn’t research it any further but with this pandemic I’m on high alert for everything...

I think cooking or baking with it is fine.
You shouldn't microwave it as it destoys all the benefits and just basically leaves you with liquid sugar.

UnaOfStormhold · 01/05/2020 20:49

Heating honey and other sugars can make it toxic to bees due to the presence of hydroxymethylfurfural. It's not toxic for humans (which is just as well as HMF is in most heat-processed foods) but is generally considered to be a sign of lower quality honey. So if you are reheating honey to decrystallise it, it's best to do it gently and slowly.

Branster · 01/05/2020 20:53

Thermal treatment, even at low temperature, of raw honey destroys some of beneficial components - I do not know exactly what they are but it’s a mix of some nutrients, enzymes, pollen.
It doesn’t become toxic. By the time it heats up on the stove, most of what is left is sugar.
Make as much syrup as you want and enjoy your cake.

avocadoze · 01/05/2020 20:55

Hearing honey does indicate a problem. Particularly if you are hearing it cooing.

(Took me a few seconds to work out wth this thread was about)

Branster · 01/05/2020 21:25

avocadoze 🤣

3luckystars · 01/05/2020 21:28

Don't eat it if it is making any noise at all, especially laughing at you or singing.

LostSapphire · 01/05/2020 21:29

It's an Ayurvedic thing (traditional Indian medicine) - heated honey is apparently very bad for you "spiritually" Grin I only know this as DPs are obsessed with Ayurveda and will only buy cold pressed honey. They nearly had a coronary when I made myself a hot honey and lemon once.

No evidence of it being toxic in mainstream medicine.

BlueBooby · 01/05/2020 21:30

I put honey in things I cook quite a lot and have never heard this, and never suffered any ill effect from it to my knowledge... Unless it's brewing inside me or something.

RuffleCrow · 01/05/2020 21:33

Hearing and cooing honey? You mean heating and cooling? Or is this a new auditory experience?

TeaStory · 01/05/2020 21:34

If that were true there would be no such thing as honey cake!

I bloody love honey cake.

Saz12 · 01/05/2020 21:44

The only problem is that the volatile elements (smell, flavour) will disappear with the steam as you heat it.

That’s one of the reasons why some “big brand” honey is a bit bland; it’s heated to make it more runny so that it’s easier to extract from the beeswax frame. But that spoils the flavour too.

Ranguski · 01/05/2020 21:57

That’s reassuring...

I only noticed the title now😂😂

Wonder if I am hearing honey as I do hear a buzzing noise in my left ear every now and again...

OP posts:
MitziK · 01/05/2020 23:05

Don't put whatever comes out of your ear onto your toast.

FloydWasACat · 01/05/2020 23:09

Well the title confused me haha! For a second I genuinely thought you were going to 'coo' at your honey! Blush

Clawdy · 01/05/2020 23:09

Haha, I thought you meant hearing the old Bobby Goldsboro hit " Honey"! Grin

AlCalavicci · 02/05/2020 13:17

I hear honey calling my name and demanding to be put on toast , it's certainly toxic for my diet! Grin

Excited101 · 02/05/2020 13:22

I’ve heard this before op, but it’s fine!
