I know the two phrases below both mean "goodnight dear" (at least I think they do!)

Nos da annwyl

Nos da fy nghalan

What is the difference in meaning though. Which would you use with a platonic friend, and which with someone more intimate?

They both sound a bit weird to me (south Walian). I'd say "nos da, cariad" to someone more intimate and "nos da, bach" to a platonic friend.

YourVagesty · 01/05/2020 13:40

I also say 'Nos da cariad'. This means 'good night love'.

YourVagesty · 01/05/2020 13:41

Should add that I've lived in west, mid and north wales. I've not heard your versions OP so best to stick with Nos da cariad, imo Smile

DS8 says he would only use 'cariad"' to someone he loves.

You could say, Nos da butt' (mate) Grin

Reluctantbettlynch · 01/05/2020 14:37

Agree, either Bach or Cariad depending on relationship

Reluctantbettlynch · 01/05/2020 14:40

Nos da annwyl- goodnight dear
The second one I've not heard. Think possibly it shouldn't have the n on the end?

Guardsman18 · 01/05/2020 14:42

Are you sure that's the correct spelling OP? Fy nghalon is my heart

dementedma · 01/05/2020 14:44

Spelling may well be wrong. His Welsh is rather rusty

CottonSock · 01/05/2020 14:45

Maybe first one supposed to be fy nghariadon or
nghariad

Guardsman18 · 01/05/2020 14:48

I think it's Nos da fy nghalon then. Good night my heart which sounds a bit odd in English but doesn't in Welsh.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 01/05/2020 14:55

I use nos da cariad and sometimes nos da bach.
