Hula hoop

Hello all!
Has anyone got a weighted hula hoop? Have you found that it tones your stomach muscles? I’m looking for an exercise activity to do from home whilst toddler naps.
How do I know what weight hoop to get?
Thanks all!

I have one, it's padded but it hurts. As with everything, I've never stuck at it. There are some good videos on Youtube on the correct technique though. I assume it just takes practice.

(I thought you were talking about the crisps at first)

I have a hoop. I got it from etsy as I wanted a larger hoop than standard because I am a larger person - size 22/24 - (bigger hoop circumference is important as otherwise you'll find it difficult to keep it up).
I used to have a weighted one but it did hurt a bit and just a normal large hoop is much cheaper and better for starting out with. Get the largest hoop you can.

Also consider how much room you have for hooping... You do need a decent amount of space.

Look up powerhoop

JonHammIsMyJamm · 01/05/2020 16:40

I have a power hoop. It’s great. Heavy and will bruise you the first few times you use it but it’s very good. It definitely helps with my core toning and trimming. I haven’t got a six pack or anything (you have to have a low % body fat for that!) but I definitely feel a difference when I use it. I do it when watching tv. Make sure you do it in both directions for an equal amount of time, so you train both sides evenly.

JonHammIsMyJamm · 01/05/2020 16:44

I agree re space. You need about 8ft of clear space so you don’t knock things with the hoop, also watch out for curious pets Hmm

I love mine but I need to be in the mood to use it, which is not very often. When I do get round to it, I do 10 minutes in each direction and it hurts if you don't allow your body to get used to it - something I tell myself - every time Blush.

I have a large non weighted hoop and a weighted hoop. The bigger the hoop the easier it is. But oh my fecking Lord the bruising when I started!

PinkDaydreams · 01/05/2020 19:18

Thank you so much for the power hoop recommendations! They get really good reviews so I will probably buy one of those. I need something to occupy myself whilst little one is having his nap, my current habit of biscuits and cake isn’t doing me any good at all! 😂
Do you just do your own thing with the hoop or do you follow specific YouTube videos/dvd?

I had a dvd, never really did it as live in a flat. But one day I will have a garden.

Prob lots of vids on you tube. Worth a watch as you need techniques to get beyond waist. I can do arm but the really cool ones are lying on your back with leg in air. Need abs for that. Saw it at a festival.

PinkDaydreams · 02/05/2020 08:49

I think I’ll order the powerhoop. I’ll have a watch of some YouTube videos before it arrives.
Like I said, I really need something to take my mind off biscuits!
Oh yes, I haven’t had hula hoop crisps for years!!! Grin

Right then, I’ve ordered the deluxe power hoop so that I can change the weights and it comes with a dvd. Thank you all! Grin

I bought a weighted one at the beginning of lockdown. It gave me bruises the first time I used it but ive persevered and getting the hang of it now. I think it's easier than a normal hoop but not sure it's doing much for my belly but I'll keep using it.

PinkDaydreams · 02/05/2020 11:04

I’m going to make myself stick at it, I have no excuse to not do it for just ten minutes a day to start with!

How are you getting on with it @PinkDaydreams? I've just ordered one.

Spring2021 · 31/01/2021 12:45

@Purrmuda how are you getting on with your hula hooping are you still doing it (just wondering whether its the type of thing that is just a flash in the pan or not? Also has your shape/weight changed would you still recommend and do you have a link to the one you purchased please? As I am a similar size to you.
Thanks x

Purrmuda · 31/01/2021 12:50

Funny you should mention this. I'm starting a 30 day hula challenge tomorrow. I occasionally do it but not often enough to counteract the food I eat!! I've been inspired by a woman on Instagram /Facebook doing hula dancing and fitness. Saw her Micheal Jackson routine and it looked fun!

Purrmuda · 31/01/2021 12:56

I got a 47inch diameter, it's actually very important as a smaller hoop will be much much more difficult to keep up and disheartening. You'll need a decent amount of space to hoop. The seller I bought from isn't active anymore but sure there are others.

Ultimateblends · 31/01/2021 12:58

I realise this a zombie thread someone has resurrected, but how long does it take someone to learn to hula hoop again?! As a child I was great. As a mid 30s adult... I cant even get it spinning! Do you have to learn again?

Purrmuda · 31/01/2021 13:03

I found it almost impossible on a normal hoop. Then I went to a festival and there were very large hoops there. Much much easier. You do need to allow for differences in size.
