Neighbours fence

amazedmummy · 01/05/2020 09:40

Next door neighbours pulled down their low fence in the back garden yesterday evening and set it on fire. They are now building a new higher one and have been doing it since 8:30.
DS had a bad night and I was really looking forward to catching up on some sleep so I am grumpy.
I feel like it's a big fuck you fence because I get the feeling that they don't like us that much.
Just having a moan really.

They should have had the courtesy to tell you they were going to do it. That's part of being a good neighbour.

All our fences are shared, so this sort of thing is a lot less likely. I can see why you're upset.

StoorieHoose · 01/05/2020 10:18

Yes but them having a trampoline doesn't affect their privacy - if they are anything like my neighbours who think they can do what they like but if anyone else does the same they complain :) don't stress it - it's only a fence. Next time you see them compliment them on the new fence and ask if you can paint your side of it

AgathaX · 01/05/2020 10:19

I really can't understand why you're upset. They'll have their privacy and you'll have yours. That's a good thing. A higher fence may keep their rabbit safer. That's a good thing. You are not having to pay for this lovely new fence. That's a good thing.
Really, what's the problem?

I understand op. We used to live next door to rude, anti social neighbours and having a low fence was torture. We eventually replaced but it was mutually agreed! We have moved and I was so dismayed to see another low fence on the side with the neighbour but they have been the friendliest people ever and I'm actually really enjoying it. They have said they will replace with a higher one post lockdown and I will really miss our (socially distanced) chats over the fence.

billy1966 · 01/05/2020 10:23

Fences do make good neighbours OP.

You sound tired.

They should have given you a heads up if they have to put a foot in your garden.

I would NOT be happy with ANYONE setting foot in MY garden without asking me.

They don't sound nice.
The fence could be a blessing.

Hope you have a better night tonight.

We live in a semi. Just before lockdown I was quoted £2,000 to replace the fence between us and our attached neighbour, one straight line. She says it's hers so we can't touch what's there (several panels are missing.) I'd be delighted if she'd repair or replace what's there as it's embarrassing. We even offered to pay half but she wouldn't respond. When it's safe I'll be putting a new one just this side of the existing fence, as high as I'm allowed to do so. Be grateful you aren't footing the bill.

amazedmummy · 01/05/2020 10:43

They asked me to paint our side of the old one and I said I would as soon as I could get fence paint. It's like gold dust round here. I even asked what colour they'd used their side so they would all match. That was only about 10 days ago. Now there's a new fence. I just don't really understand.

My new ndn, decided to tidy up their overgrown garden, ripping out boundary bushes, including our fence which their ivy had grown into. Now there is a fifteen foot gap littered with dying branches and bits of wood.
They didn't think to tell us first, or check that there was somewhere local open to buy replacement panels.
They get a great view of our washing line for their efforts.
Idiots.
More to come, when they start their extension I'm sure. I'd love them to replace with a six foot fence at no cost. Can't see it happening.

FartingInTheFence · 01/05/2020 10:55

They asked me to paint our side of the old one

So, if they didnt like you, as you think, then why are they talking to you?

Can you not see how this makes you look deranged?

All I know is, if my neighbours whacked up a new 6ft fence and it wasnt costing me a penny, I would be delighted. But seriously, you do sound deranged.

amazedmummy · 01/05/2020 10:57

@FartingInTheFence why are you obsessed with the word deranged? I'm allowed to be upset. Also plenty of people speak to people they don't like.

Enjoy your new-found privacy courtesy of your new fence @amazedmummy.

TisforTucan · 01/05/2020 11:20

Did they not even say anything?

Qgardens · 01/05/2020 11:28

They probably felt your youngster looking over the fence frequently was quite intrusive and probably envisioned the lack of privacy getting worsen as he got older.
They've had time to consider the fence - first the upkeep and now deciding they maty as well replace it. Don't take it personally. Most people would prefer a high fence. i would, however much I like my neighbours.

MrsSiriusBlack1 · 01/05/2020 11:32

@FartingInTheFence you sound deranged luv

TheGreatWave · 01/05/2020 11:39

You are reading far too much into it. Maybe after they had painted it they realised it wasn't actually in that great a condition and so would replace it.

If you want to paint fences, I have some you can be cracking on with. Wink

Chista · 01/05/2020 11:39

Firstly a higher fence is always a better thing, gives you and them privacy. But burning the old fence - that's an offence and can be liable to a £1000 fine, they also should have had the courtesy to tell you because they are accessing your land and cannot do so without your permission.

pooopypants · 01/05/2020 12:28

The only thing here I could be upset about is that they were in YOUR garden. They're spending a lot of money replacing a fence which will give you both privacy. Maybe they didn't appreciate your child gawping at their rabbit (and presumably the rest of their garden) and they want more privacy.

You sound obsessed. With the fence, your neighbours and their opinion of you. And no, not everyone likes babies, particularly other people's babies.

You need a hobby OP.

ArthurMrdr2 · 01/05/2020 12:39

It's done now, I know you feel upset and think they dont like you but they probably didn't think you would be upset. That is a standard height fence to put up. I would have a six foot fence put up even if I lived next to my best friend. You need to be able to relax in your own back garden without worrying if someone is going to talk to you or keep having a nosy. Try not to take it to heart.

LindainLockdown · 01/05/2020 13:00

Of course you are not deranged, it is understandable that you are upset when you have such mixed messages from them, then when they should communicate with you eg a simple note through the door letting you know about the work, you get nothing.

As for workmen trespassing on your property well I would have been bloody annoyed at that, cheeky sods. However I have found that workmen often don't give 2 shits about people's properties, especially the neighbouring properties. Not all obviously, but in more than half of the work I have had experienced this has been the case.

Try and take the positives from it and I think the slight paranoia you are feeling is likely to be yet another delightful side-effect of lockdown. When you next see them they might say we decided on a new fence anyway, but couldn't come and discuss it etc. Being friendly with neighbours can be a poisoned chalice, having a civil but more distant relationship often works out better.
