Selling on Facebook - how to take payment

During the lockdown, I’ve been having a clear out and have some items I’d like to sell once the restrictions have been lifted a bit.
I’ve never sold online before and don’t have paypal, what’s the safest way to take payments?

PayPal is the safest way. It's very quick to set up.

Cash on collection. Not PayPal if they are collecting as they can then claim they never received the item and PayPal will refund them.

Thanks both👍
It will be collection only sorry should have said, they are quite large items.
I thought about cash, but not many people want to use it right now.
Is a bank transfer an option or is that too risky in someway? (Real novice at this).

Problem with Bank Transfer is that - to ensure it is paid you need to get it done there and then when the pick the article up.

They won't do it before because you might not be genuine and you shouldn't let them take it away before payment.

Sometimes bank transfers are instant but mine sometimes takes an hour or two to come through.

I think cash is the way to go.

I've been taking cash on collection, the buyer puts the money through the letterbox and returns to their car then I open the door, place the item on the ground and close the door.

I put the money into a pot where it will sit for sometime as I won't be going out to spend it anytime soon.

Good point about bank transfers thanks!
Ok so I’ll do cash only.
Is there anything else obvious (or not) that I need to be aware of?

Thanks again.

I’ve been doing it via PayPal.

FB marketplace is usually cash on collection.

Don't be surprised when people haggle on the price (before agreeing to purchase) it's common for people to make an offer which you can either agree or decline. Price should be agreed before they come to collect.

If the items are particularly precious or valuable I'd just hold onto them for now. Personally I buy and sell on FB quite regularly but am avoiding it at the moment as I don't want to handle second hand items right now. I imagine lots of people feel the same, so if you are able to store them you might do better selling them once COVID is less threatening.

I bought an item the other day from Facebook marketplace. I put the money in an envelope. My husband knocked when he arrived and put the envelope on the doorstep and moved away, the lady put the item out and moved back inside. Social distancing at all times. To be extra cautious, you could just leave the money in the envelope for a few days (in the sun) so if anything was on it, it dies off? And wash hands thoroughly after touching envelope.

Cash on collection. Take the money and then wash your hands. You'd have to open the envelope to check regardless before handing over goods. I handle money daily for my job and wash my hands or sanitise after.

Don't put the item outside until the buyer has actually turned up. There have been several items nicked round my way that people had put out for buyers. It's complicated by the fact a lot of other people are leaving items out for folks to help themselves to for free at the moment.

purplecorkheart · 01/05/2020 12:09

Cash on collection only. Paypal is not advised for collection only items as if the buyer tell paypal they did not receive the item them you have no proof of postage and paypal will issue a refund.

CatBatCat · 01/05/2020 13:11

Cash on collection only
