The National Theatre is streaming Frankenstein (with Benedict Cumberbatch) tonight if you are interested!

My question is - has anyone seen it and would it be suitable for a ten year old? Thanks.

Same here!

Nettleskeins · 01/05/2020 10:01

Loved all the father/son comparisons. And creature enjoying nature whilst.F locks himself away. Loved the stars/chandelier/ice compared to promethean fire/knowledge/loss of innocence. Loved the wine.bringing F back to life, compared to hideous torture galvanisation bringing Creature to life at beginning. Loved the bells religion/death/marriage/swissness/summoning. Seethrough crucible and seethrough house. Rope imagery, bound together, hangman, lifelines.

You can really see the influence of the Frankenstein design on the Industrial Revolution section of the 2012 opening ceremony, which of course was also directed by Danny Boyle: the bell, the steampunk elements etc. They make interesting companion pieces.

Yes. It also reminds me of the way they did George and The Dragon a year and half ago. Industialization, machine age is quite a recurrent artistic device. It must be the equivalent of sword fights and bears in shakespeare plays, these clanking steaming horrors. But also seductive the cogs and wheels. Nature also being horrible/bloody

LilacTree1 · 01/05/2020 13:06

Thanks Bonnes

yippee - yes, you could see some multi use from the olympics 😂

Fumnudge · 01/05/2020 14:54

I've tried to find out but no joy: are they alternating each night for the week? I'd love to see BC as the doctor but will miss tonight's opportunity.

Appuskidu · 01/05/2020 14:59

Where did they cut the rape scene from? Was it with Elizabeth on the bed on the wedding night?

iklboo · 01/05/2020 15:02

It was so, so good. They did very obviously cut the rape & murder scene but it didn't affect the overall performance. DS(14) said it was one of the best plays he's ever seen. We're watching the other version tonight.

The staging was incredible and very inventive.

3kidsareenough · 01/05/2020 15:04

I watched it last night with my 15 yr old DD she absolutely loved it. We didn't want it to end...the set was fantastic & the music. We watched Jane Eyre a few weeks ago, also excellent. Look forward to it on a Thursday night.

CountFosco · 01/05/2020 15:06

Have to say I'm really loving catching up on all these NT shows. Treasure Island was a big hit with the DC, and DD2 (10) and I loved Twelfth Night, I last saw Twelfth Night 25 years ago in Stratford so it was fun to see a gender swapped version. The interview with Tamsin Grieg was excellent as well. DH and I are going to watch Frankenstein without the kids to assess suitability before letting the 10 or 12 yo watch.

lynsey91 · 01/05/2020 15:49

We saw it with JLM as the creature so might watch it with BC in that part this time

BonnesVacances · 01/05/2020 17:18

Fumnudge From 7pm tonight both versions will be available on YouTube so you can pick a version to watch. BC as the Creature is available till next Thursday, JLM as the Creature till next Friday.

The rape and neck breaking scene was cut from the wedding night. BC dragged Elizabeth to the bed and the next thing we saw was JLM brandishing a gun and a BC on the bed with a dead Elizabeth. It was obvious he'd raped her from the shot overhead as he was positioned between her legs, but I didn't realise he'd broken her neck until I read about it. I thought he'd strangled her.

diddl · 01/05/2020 19:12

I've just watched the one with BC as the creature & am interested to see how JLM interprets it.

Gutted to have missed Twelfth Night though!

Ledehe · 01/05/2020 19:40

Has anyone seen both? I don't think I'll watch the two versions (won't have enough time to myself) and wondering which version people would recommend

diddl · 01/05/2020 21:11

Well I've now watched both & I preferred this version with JLM as the creature.

rooarsome · 01/05/2020 21:11

I saw the version of JLM as the creature some time ago too. It was superb.

viques · 01/05/2020 21:35

I watched JLM tonight having seen the stage version with BC when it was at the National, I have to say that IMO JLM won the creature off hands down. I thought he was wonderful, heartbreaking in both his innocence and cruelty. There was a lot of the production that I had forgotten so it was wonderful to see it again.

I think one of the problems with the NT, especially when they do the huge Olivier stage productions is that your eyes are drawn everywhere as you try to take it all in and it is all too easy to get distracted from the main events. I absolutely love their huge productions, I love the clever sets, the music, effects and costumes, they are exciting ,emotional ,adventurous, imaginative , thrilling and magical, everything that a live performance should be, but my brain can't cope with it all at the same time ! These NT at home are a wonderful way to relive what I have enjoyed at the theatre, but in a way that helps me to focus on the text and the acting.

CountFosco · 01/05/2020 21:41

your eyes are drawn everywhere as you try to take it all in and it is all too easy to get distracted from the main events.

This is what I love about the theatre. On film you see what the director wants to see but in a theatre everyone has a different experience because we all watch slightly different things depending where we are sitting and what catches our eye. I love watching what is going on at the side of the main action, the actress sitting in the corner interacting with the audience when a big speech is going on.

viques · 01/05/2020 21:57

countfosco my problem too! Which is why I am enjoying these screened versions so much as I have the memory of the live experience with the intensity of the screened performance.

viques · 01/05/2020 21:58

Ps I wish they would do Amadeus. Now that was one where you certainly needed more than one pair of eyes!

Fumnudge · 01/05/2020 22:15

Thanks BonnesVacances

AlexaShutUp · 01/05/2020 22:30

We watched the BC as Creature version last night, looking forward to watching the other one. Loved it last night, it was so poignant.

We have watched all of the NT at home screenings so far, except for Treasure Island. We've thoroughly enjoyed all of them! Was Treasure Island any good?

iklboo · 02/05/2020 01:54

Didn't enjoy the JLM version as much as the BC version.

KingscoteStaff · 02/05/2020 06:35

We watched BC as Dr F and were so amazed that we went back in at 6 the next morning to queue for tickets to see it the other way round.

The lighting designer is a genius.

Helmetbymidnight · 02/05/2020 06:39

oh that was fabulous! jlm was incredible!

12yr old enjoyed it- 10 yr old wandered off to watch sponge bob.

gutted that its the only one we managed to watch. you cant watch them after the week, can you?
