Air in flip top straw bottle

happymummy12345 · 30/04/2020 16:35

I have a bottle with a flip top straw. The problem I have is when I fill it up and put the lid on, there is always air in the straw. I've tried making sure the straw is on tight, and tightening the lid fully, then loosening it slightly. Neither make a difference. What am I doing wrong? (Wasn't a cheap bottle either and it's really frustrating).

Can anyone help please?

No one at all?

I have no idea sorry! However thought I'd give your post a bump...

TwistyHair · 01/05/2020 16:09

Why don’t you want air in the straw?

happymummy12345 · 01/05/2020 17:54

Because when I try to drink it from it it either doesn't come out or it makes a very loud noise.
Maybe air in the straw isn't the best or right way to describe the problem. I just assumed that what it was

I thought they always got air in the straw

happymummy12345 · 01/05/2020 17:59

See my above post. That's what happens and that's what I'm trying to avoid.

Is there a hole in the straw?

happymummy12345 · 01/05/2020 18:04

No the straw is fine

Fill the bottle and then run some water (or whatever) throught the straw from the top.

happymummy12345 · 01/05/2020 18:16

@thejollygargler thanks. Would I run the water through the straw before I put the lid on the bottle?

Put less drink in. I anyways thought it was the opposite problem and there wasn't enough drink, but actually a bit less than you think you need solves the problem

ludicrouslemons · 01/05/2020 18:21

Is the top bit screwed on well? I think that can make a noise if air can be pulled through.

happymummy12345 · 01/05/2020 18:22

@TwerkForTeachers it happens regardless of how much is in it. We've tried it full (not too full, and half full. The same thing happens.

The top seems to be on as tight as it can go. We have even tried loosening it slightly to see if that helps. And the straw itself is on tight as well

thejollygargler · 01/05/2020 18:29

Sorry I have no idea but it seems logical. There would need to be enough room in the bottle for the displaced air though.

limmylee · 01/05/2020 18:29

If you push the straw firmly into the lid a little tighter it'll create a gap at the bottom between the straw and the base of the bottle. I had the same problem and this solved it. If the straw is touching the bottom of the bottle the air can't escape.

This thread made me laugh Grin

happymummy12345 · 01/05/2020 18:48

Thanks both for the suggestions @thejollygargler and @limmylee

@nahnonever why?

OP posts:
mollibu · 01/05/2020 18:49

You need to loosen the lid a little bit, OP. But remember to screw it back on properly if you're putting it back in your bag!

happymummy12345 · 01/05/2020 18:56

I've tried that it didn't help

Isn't it something to do with gravity lol

TwistyHair · 01/05/2020 19:33

Oh I know what you mean now. Like a full mouthful doesn’t come out because it’s got bubbles in it? No idea. Not had that happen before even with a cheap one.
