What project/adventure would you go on if you won a massive amount of money? (keep it light people)

NC as didn't like my last user name

So i'm stuck in isolation, two small children and a stalled career, fantasising about all the things i would do if money were no object.

Say you won 100 million on the lottery. After you have done all the 'boring' stuff, assuming that's all sorted and you now had a pot to risk on a venture of some sort, what would you do? Business idea, travel adventure, mad cap schemes, surgery to turn yourself into a dolphin etc.

Your answers cannot be any of the following as we assume you have already done these.

Securing your/anyone else's future
investments
buying a house
paying it to a charity

I would

a) Start my own small gaming company that would not need to be profitable for a year or two. i would be creative director but it would a groovy place to work with the focus on innovation and creativity with a really well treated team that can work flexibly/from home.

b) Buy development plots all over the city i live in and turn them into green spaces for the public instead of building on them.

c) Build a water park next to my (new) house :)

My project would be to buy some land, perhaps half a dozen acres, (not too isolated) and build my dream house from scratch with a library, cellars and indoor pool.
It would have a high-walled garden or parterre made of reclaimed brick, where I would grow peaches, greengages and vines against a sunny south facing wall.
It would need a large, Victorian style glasshouse too. And an asparagus bed and soft fruit area.
I'd also have a rose garden .
Then - A barn. Indoor and outdoor space to keep some animals -- goats, dogs, cats, perhaps a donkey or two.

After a round the world tour I fancy buying a decent size house and using it as a place for homeless people to stay while they get back on their feet.

Did actually plan the whole thing out one evening at work when i was bored. Maybe two places, I’d have a place out of town with a bit of land as well. Maybe even add in rehab facilities for people with drug/alcohol problems.

jellybe · 30/04/2020 17:19

I'd open a wedding venue. There's a beautiful big old neglected house not far from me with some land which I'd love to buy and turn into an wedding venue.

Or I'd spend time retraining in fashion design and try launching my own line.

Or I'd go around the world but not use any planes.

Or I'd open stables and build up to owning a stud farm and bred winners.

megletthesecond · 30/04/2020 17:24

Me and the dc's would go on a tour of the Amazing Hotels that were in that documentary series a couple of years ago.

If we had to pick one we'd do the modern rainforest hotel in Ecuador, Mashpi Lodge. I even did the sums once approx £15k for us three.

Giggorata · 30/04/2020 17:28

I'd buy up woodland, buy land and plant still more..
Somewhere in the middle would be a kind of Iron Age roundhouse for friends and family to use, or for us to have times together round the camp fire.
Somewhere else would be a Forest School/centre, along the same lines, for kids in care or in need.
I'd also want a seaside retreat, right on the sea. Perhaps a lighthouse.
And I’d construct a stone circle, aligned to the seasonal skies, and a labyrinth.
In my main eco home, I'd have stained glass windows, and a massive library. Outside, a huge orchard, with old fashioned apples and pears and things like quinces, medlars and mulberries. Under the trees would live chickens. Lots of veg gardens and glasshouses, ground heat pump, solar tech and a well. A lake, dug out to create an artificial hill, covered with trees and flowers...
I'd invest in some of the businesses I buy from that will need help post Covid and buy up a massive defunct store or office on several floors in a town that doesn’t have a huge arty or touristy presence, for start ups or artists.
I'd help village pubs start up again post Covid, and small local breweries.
I might buy a fun fair....

coldwarenigma · 30/04/2020 17:33

A yacht would be on my shopping list and a round the world trip, stop offs to visit places that are on my lottery win list.

3luckystars · 30/04/2020 17:36

I'd build huge music rooms for all the schools, swimming pools, horse riding farms and running tracks with gyms and huge art rooms also.

JKSN · 30/04/2020 17:36

I would travel the world in luxury for a few years with DH and DS. Then, as a PP has already said, do the whole F1 season (mainly for DH), all the tennis grand slams (mainly for me). Then I'd buy or build a big house with stables, a fancy horse and employ a riding instructor. I'd have loads of dogs, some goats and an Aston Martin.

bookmum08 · 30/04/2020 17:38

I have always wanted to buy the 1930s Lido in my hometown from the council and replace the circa 1990s 'upgrades' and turn it back to looking Art Deco style. I would open it all year round instead of the pathetic 2 months a year it does now.

AgentProvocateur · 30/04/2020 17:42

I’d buy a theatre, and put on productions. But there would be no food or drink allowed in the auditorium, no fire exit signs, no one allowed to go to the toilet (other than at the interval - I’m not a monster) and there would be absolutely no talking/singing allowed. Oh, and the ratio of toilets (for the interval) would be 90% women, 10% men. Oh, and no latecomers Wink

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 30/04/2020 17:47

I like to go to Tierra del Fuego and Antarctica. My Mum went about three years ago and it sounds amazing. If I had plenty of money then I think I'd get there slowly stopping off in beautiful luxury hotels/ranches/mountain hideaways for a week at a time, with a lady's maid to do all my laundry, packing etc and an admin person to organise flights, connections, restaurant bookings and all that stuff. (Can you tell that on family holidays I'm the one that does most of the organisation and mental load.)

I've always thought that I would like to buy a whole town in an attractive area, preferably an abandoned one or one in decline, and repopulate it with people who have ideas but no place to execute them. Buying whole towns only seems to be a thing in the US though, and I don't particularly want live there. Perhaps Spain might be a possibility?

Snaga · 30/04/2020 17:50

My travel adventure would be Italy. I've always been fascinated with the country and would love to properly explore there at leisure.

My community venture would be to create a sporting centre with the specific aim of promoting girls/women in sport and providing a space that has been built around the specific needs of females in sports.

The centre would still be accessible to men/boys but they'd be guests at the facility rather than being the ones who get preferential access.

SimonJT · 30/04/2020 17:56

I’d do more to improve RL playing conditions, our union is shit and allows players to be treated like scum. They think removing the minimum wage of £15k for super league players and forcing players to play three times a week is good for player welfare. Twats.

I’d have a walk in trainer closet.

I’d have a gaming room.

I would have a fully kitted gym/training facility at home.

If I needed to wear a suit it would be Tom Ford Windsor fit.

I’d buy my own rugby tots franchise (i know that’s fairly tame).

Have a beer tap in the kitchen.

SeaViewBliss · 30/04/2020 18:00

Set our DCs up with homes. Fanny around at home for a few more years untIl DS is 19 or so. Then DH and I would buy a motor home and travel.

Loads of places in the UK we want to go and then on to the rest of Europe.

If we get bored of motor home living we will nip over to the West coast of Florida for a while.

TimeIhadaNameChange · 30/04/2020 18:04

Am I allowed to set up my own charity? I've said before I'd buy small houses throughout the UK and furnish with not only the normal stuff but things for animals - kennels, beds, cages for small animals and the like, plus stock up on the necessities for the above. Then they'd be let to people fleeing dv or who are homeless who have pets, and wouldn't otherwise leave their current situation because of them. They'd be 6-month lets, rent-free.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 30/04/2020 18:10

Found a medieval town in Italy that might work, 1700 acres, working farm, woodlands, two lakes. Very nice. €40 million. www.essentisgroup.com/index.php/properties/poggio-santa-cecilia/

FrangipaniBlue · 30/04/2020 22:57

Trek the Inca Trail
Climb to Everest Base Camp

Jasmin82 · 01/05/2020 00:06

I'd love to do a round the world cruise (one of the things me and my Mum planned to do many, many moons ago that never happened).
That aside, I'd buy all the fabric that I am currently desiring and can't afford to make nice things for my house and Resident Collie.
I'd also give support to some of my friends ventures.

JingsMahBucket · 01/05/2020 00:09

I think I’d also like to dive deeply into my genealogy and spent time traveling to the places where my ancestors were.

MrsAvocet · 01/05/2020 00:48

Ooh some fantastic ideas here - I would like to do quite a lot of them.
I would like to travel a lot but unfortunately a lot of the places I would like to see are very dangerous at the moment and I am not sure if even with unlimited funds some it could be done. I really would love to do some of the world's great train journeys though, maybe the Trans Siberian Express, the Blue Train in South Africa, the Palace on Wheels in India and of course the Orient Express.
I would buy my husband a grand piano, a couple of classic cars and have our rather shabby little boat restored to her former glory.
And I would buy bikes. Lots of bikes. And travel to watch every bike race I felt like. Maybe I would buy a team actually. I would definitely sponsor some up and coming young riders.
In a more altruistic vein I would fund research into a rare medical condition that affects a family member and provide scholarships for children from our area to cover things like sport, music and dance as well as academic subjects.
I would probably keep our existing house, just do it up a bit and buy some of the adjoining farm land., but I also quite fancy a villa in the Italian Lakes and a restored windmill in Flanders.
Then I would get rid of Donald Trump, by some means or other.....Halo
