Really really struggling to breastfeed. Will it get easier very soon?

It's just this last week! I can't stand to feed DS. Sounds awful but I want to push him off when he's latched on Blush

He's done absolutely nothing wrong. The latch is fine, he doesn't move about. I just feel a bit unsettled when he's feeding in the last few days or so.

Is this completely normal and will it go? Or will it also ways feels like this?

I think it’s a ‘thing’. If you google breastfeeding aversion there are lots of articles about it so I think it must be fairly common.

AvoidingRealHumans · 30/04/2020 13:09

You don't have to breastfeed. If it's making you feel how it is then it would be better to go onto formula.

Dranktoomuchpepsi · 30/04/2020 13:09

Sorry! Thought I said in my OP but he's 2.5. Never had any issues until now

Amazing to have fed for so long. You've done a great thing for your son. Maybe how you're feeling is just a natural way to signal the end of breastfeeding. Or could you be getting broody for another baby and starting to see your son as a big kid now?

Laaf80 · 30/04/2020 13:13

I sometimes get that when I’m due on. Especially as my 13month old fidgets and touches while I feed him.

I do give him the odd bottle of formula at this time if it gets too much.

Dranktoomuchpepsi · 30/04/2020 13:14

huck Thank you. Defitnley not wanting another baby, the thought of being pregnant and growing something makes me feel physically sick (for myself of course, not anyone else!)

Ahh I see, maybe you've come to end of your breast feeding journey and your body is signalling this to you.
Would you consider weaning him off now?

Lua · 30/04/2020 13:15

It is very likely that will go away. I went through phases like that and then got better. Try to distract yourself when you are feeding him?

At current state, where people are struggling to buy formula, keeping easy feeding can be quite an advantage.....

Puddlelane123 · 30/04/2020 13:15

Could you be pregnant op? I had horrendous feeding aversion during pregnancy and it was toe curling every time my toddler latched on. I had this overwhelming desire to throw him off me. Was so strange.

bedtimebrew · 30/04/2020 13:16

Is he feeding more than usual? I'm
Still feeding my 3 year old and with lockdown he's wanted to be on the breast more often which has been hard at times.

Lua · 30/04/2020 13:17

sorry... do you mean 2.5months or 2.5 years? I answered as the first....

Dranktoomuchpepsi · 30/04/2020 13:19

2.5 years.

Don't think I'm pregnant, no. He is feeding more often because of lockdown but not loads more. Will hope it just goes away soon. It is quite depressing Sad

Could you be pregnant OP? Due your period? Maybe it's just your body's way of telling you that it's had enough. And I'm assuming you mean 2.5yrs

MaryAnneMumof2 · 30/04/2020 13:21

I breast fed my first and hated every minute of it - looking back I am annoyed I did it- it was a disaster he had to be put in hospital at around two weeks as had lost too much weight as my milk didn’t come down quick enough, then I got mastitis which was agony and even when all of that has improved it just felt wrong. looking back it definitely was a factor in how low I felt at the time and I blame my midwife and our health visitor ( plus my mother in law!) for making me feel I had no choice but to do it. Anyway with my second I felt much more confident said right from the start he was having formula. Both my boys are healthy and there is no difference whatsoever between them. Breast feeding is good if it’s for you, but if it isn’t for you then that’s fine, formula is fine! Be kind to yourself

MaryAnneMumof2 · 30/04/2020 13:24

Oh sorry @Dranktoomuchpepsi I didn’t realise you have already been feeding for 2.5 years, in that case it sounds to me just like your breast feeding journey is done, may be wean him?

june2007 · 30/04/2020 13:29

Well done for feeding so long. Is it hormoan related? Is it astress? If your journey ends then it ends and you have done a grand job. If you want it to continue you may find that this is just a blip? (This too will pass.?)

bedtimebrew · 30/04/2020 13:30

If you want to carry on feeding, I'm confident it will pass. If you can distract him so he feeds less and if you can get any time on your own try that well

TheDIsiilusionedAnarchist · 30/04/2020 13:40

I think it’s normal to go through phases of this with breastfeeding toddlers. I certainly do, personally I’m quite committed to child led weaning but I’d limit feed length and frequency and review in a week. If aversion lasts I think it can mean you might want to wean.
If it doesn’t last then it’s likely a transient hormonal thing.
