What basics should dd know by end of year 2?

Dd has some un diagnosed sen.

I'm trying to keep her ticking over at home. Little and often between lots of doing what she wants!
But I'd love something more concrete to be working towards to help boost her before year 3.
Her reading level is around 6 to 7.

I've signed up to reading eggs, she does about 10 mins everyday.
We do flash cards.
Reading little and often.
Handwriting practise.
We are working through the most common words for spelling.
She's quite good with 2,3,5,10 and 11 times tables so we will start 4...and carry on.

We have done a history project on Florence nightingale which she enjoyed.
The school are not forthcoming with her giving us more information so I can't go back to the school.

Can anyone tell me is there anything else aside from the basics we can work on eg... Perhaps 3d shapes?

You could look at lessons s here for ideas? Look at year 1 and year 2

We’re really liking the link above, Maths seeds and whiterose.

I know with maths we’ve been doing fractions, telling the time, understanding money and change. The 1,2,3,5 and 10 times tables. Counting forwards and backwards and looking at arrays, partitioning to prepare them for addition abs subtraction using column method. Shapes, 2d and 3D, understanding edges, faces and vertices. Being able to recognise the shapes including right angles.

My son is really obsessed with Mathseeds, so much so we’ve just purchased the 12 month prescription. It looks to me having watched him that it’s closely linked to the ks1 syllabus so it’s covering things he would be being taught in school. If you have reading eggs you should also have mathseeds.

We’re reading everyday and trying to write everyday. Little bit of science and global learning.

Great link, just had a look thanks. Some good ideas there, esp in maths.

Just another.
We had the free reading eggs trial but didn't try maths seeds! I purchased the reading eggs 12 month today. What a shame.

She sounds like she’s got the basics so definitely don’t worry. I bet you’re doing really well. We are doing the bbc bite size stuff, reading and writing and maths stuff. We got frogspawn for the habitat project but the cat got at it. So we learnt about predators. Put year 2 science/English or whatever subject you fancy into Pinterest that’s given us some good ideas too. To be honest I am just keeping him ticking over and not over facing too much. Also I have just ordered a couple of uk/world map jigsaws with the county’s and country’s on them.

Mamma!!

Sorry thats, awful! But hilarious 😂.. Years ago dd would run home every day to peep at our Robins nest until one day's, met by.. Chaos.

Dd is almost bottom of 60 children...

Mammatino · 29/04/2020 22:48

Please don’t worry about where she’s coming in at with the other kids. There are plenty of very pushy mums in our playground who like to brag about their kids. The ones who do it are very insecure and their kids aren’t speaking fluent Swedish at 6, or being put forward for engineering excellence awards as one mum likes to pretend. DS was put in special measures last year, the school helpfully forgot to mention this to us. We only found out when he was taken off them, he is the youngest in his year and was very very shy about asking for help. Once things clicked with him he came on in leaps and bounds. Just keep her reading and writing progressing, work on her maths skills and give her lots of encouragement. DS likes the maths and English games on bbc bite size, it’s just a different way of learning and he sees it as fun. Do your best and don’t worry or get too stressed she will be fine.

Crunchymum · 29/04/2020 22:51

What do you mean she is almost bottom of 60 kids?

Is this your assumption?

Swingingsally · 29/04/2020 22:56

No crunchy 🙄 I have not got personal knowledge of all the other dc.
I've been told this.

Ie. This isn't as normal kid I'm keeping ticking over. This is a dc who is struggling to learn and could be even further behind in year 3.

Thanks for mamm

We have not tried bite size because we have reading eggs. I'd rather follow the one path. What would have been ideal is a copy of the year 2 curriculum, then I can go back over stuff and move forward with stuff and then.. I could pull in bite size according to the curriculum path.. It feels very random at the moment moment.

Who told you this?

We have a double year group (and my eldest is y2) but its unimaginable a professional at our school would say or imply this about a child.

FWIW, you sound like you are doing a gang job.

Are you trying to get a formal diagnosis for your DC?

(Your school sound awful with regards to general "lockdown" support as well)

Crunchymum · 29/04/2020 23:02

Gang = great.

Pinkflipflop85 · 29/04/2020 23:07

You can very easily access the year 2 curriculum on google. You can also find the examples of expected standard in reading, writing and maths.

Swingingsally · 29/04/2020 23:07

Crunchy, this is the first teacher who has been absolutely honest with us about where are dd is against her peers so I'm greatfull.
Yes we are trying to pursue what the issue is and have ruled out some things already.

She has never been open to letting me work with her, until the last 9 months and in that time she has made good progress. So although I'm working from home, om keen to get one on one bite size bits in... She's in routine largely revolving around what she wants. With little bits of learning being inserted!

Gang. I thought that was new speak. Grin

Pink, silly question but is that standard across all schools?

NailsNeedDoing · 29/04/2020 23:09

If you get onto Twinkl with one of the free codes, they have summary sheets of the curriculum for each year group and they’re a really clear and simple way of seeing what’s expected.

Pinkflipflop85 · 29/04/2020 23:10

Yes. It is the national curriculum.
Academies don't have to follow it, but it is very unusual.

Pinkflipflop85 · 29/04/2020 23:12

Twinkl curriculum overviews is a good suggestion. The descriptors are nice and straightforward.

Swingingsally · 29/04/2020 23:12

Nails that sounds promising thanks.
I did glance at twinkle earlier but it seems to want to sign me up and I thought it was free etc.

Crunchymum · 29/04/2020 23:18

It's all well and good a teacher telling you this, as long as they are offering the support to assist your DD.

NailsNeedDoing · 29/04/2020 23:25

Google for a free code, they’ve made them easy to find. You will have to sign up, but it is definitely free right now.

Student58 · 29/04/2020 23:28

Just google end of year expectations for Year 2 and it will come up on lots of school websites. I've had to do this for my DS as he is about 2 years behind in writing and the school target of improving his handwriting isn't particularly helpful. If he starts Yr 5 at a Year 3 level in the current circumstances that would probably be a good result.

sunnie1992 · 29/04/2020 23:39

I have a year 3 DD and a year 1 DS.

So year 2 should know 2, 5 and 10 times tables by heart. Use times tables rockstars to check her speed.

6-7 reading level is at the lower end at this stage in year 2. How often is her book changed?

We used reading chest to order books at their reading level - so they could read something new at the right level each day.

Check with the school how often books are changed and how quickly they can make progress. If the school aren't on top of it, she can languish at the lower levels unnecessarily/

We also use reading eggs and math seeds. Has she completed reading eggs and moved to reading express?

Howmanysleepsnow · 29/04/2020 23:53

My y2 is behind. Yours sounds great! Following for suggestions.
