Sympathy - am coeliac, DH just glutened my dinner!

Was really looking forward all day to 2nd night of the yummy homemade turkey chili with beans and corn and butternut squash and chipotle in it. Went downstairs after long stressful day of working very early then taking over the kids and DH has used the gluteny pasta spoon to stir the chili several times.

I know I have lockdown rage but seriously i could cry! I was going to make myself nachos as I never normally get to eat them (don’t trust them to be properly gf in a restaurant).

Wahhhhhh!

Oh I hate that. DH does it a lot. I think it comes from not entirely believing how slight contamination can be a big problem.

Some days I think that only a second kitchen (or divorce) will solve it.

You have my heartfelt sympathy anyway FlowersFlowers

Peonyonpoint · 29/04/2020 19:41

He does know, he’s just tired I think and now terrified i will in fact divorce him.!

Why would he do that knowing that you’re coeliac?? And why was he making pasta with chilli anyway??

Peonyonpoint · 29/04/2020 19:42

But my rage for about ten minutes was SO HUGE AND INTENSE that I had to go and hide. I am still hiding.

I hope he was suitably ashamed of himself.

I'm not coeliac but three of my family members are so I cook almost entirely gluten free . In a similar incident another non coeliac family member who definitely should know better scooped a load of chilli up out of the pan with a slice of normal bread. I was furious and made them cook an alternative meal for everyone.

Peonyonpoint · 29/04/2020 19:44

He forgot, in fairness when I got down he was looking terrified and did a full confession, has come to apologise profusely again, BUT STILL. I WANT AN EASY BUT HOMEMADE DINNER BUT IT IS DENIED.

Huff!!!!!!

God yeah people do that sort of thing all the time, I’m a bit like ‘BUT YOU OF ALL PEOPLE I THOUGHT I COULD TRUST.

Anyway he can put both the kids together.

Going to boot him out of the kitchen and make refried beans for the nachos.

I keep a loaf of wheatfree bakery soft white loaf in the freezer for these occasions. Gluten free cheese toastie....

ReadilyAvailable · 29/04/2020 19:45

We’ve got two coeliac children here so I’m always super careful about cross-contamination. Even though it’s a pain.

Poor you. What is your DH doing to ensure that you get a dinner that you can eat?

Harriett123 · 29/04/2020 19:46

Oh no. I would be so angry if DP did this.
At least you caught him doing it before you accidentally ate the gluten chilli ( I have previously been served gravy at SIL house with worchester sauce in it, was an accident but I paid for it)

Peonyonpoint · 29/04/2020 19:46

@CoronaIsComing eh, they were bored with rice.

Fear is a great memory prompt Wink

Maybe it’s just me, but I think it’s quite understandable. Once you’ve been accidentally glutened once or twice, and dealt with the consequences, the prospect of it happening again, and the fact the you only just spotted it, PLUS it being a meal you were particularly looking forward to....well I’d be locked in the en-suite doing deep breathing exercises, I think. Where are you hiding?

SistemaAddict · 29/04/2020 19:47

Get colour coded spoons. And possibly pans.

StripeyLurcher · 29/04/2020 19:48

Oh no chilli rage Angry
Have a glass of Wine and cheese nachos and make dh cook you something nice instead.

Peonyonpoint · 29/04/2020 19:49

He has grovelled but I am the good cook of the house so I feel a bit ‘do not come at me with your inferior offerings’ Grin

Just having a shit day, client came at me with a big change (that they can’t really see is a big change) in a project due in two weeks. You know when you’re like ‘surrrrrrre that is no problem in a lockdown with preschoolers and DH also working full time and full on’ (while thinking oh at least I have my GF CHILI to look forward to! ShockAngry)

It's rubbish when you can't eat a meal when you are looking forward to it. My Dad is Coeliac, I'm so careful when cooking for him. I'm used to checking every label (and if anything is ambiguous I ask him)

MrsGrindah · 29/04/2020 19:51

There is nothing worse than food disappointment. I could cry for you OP.
I remember as kids my friends parents promising us fish and chips. We were so looking forward to it. They came back with pie and chips instead! My friend cried bitterly .

Peonyonpoint · 29/04/2020 19:55

Update: he has to bath the feral kids and put them to bed while I enjoy a gf beer and make refried bean nachos with serious cheese. Justice is served.

Total sympathy from me.

I've been eating normally for a few months as I got sick of having to avoid everything and seemed to be managing okay. Until tonight. I'm sat here in a agony and I can barely breathe the pain is so bad.

Troels · 29/04/2020 20:20

Sympathy from me too .I'm Coeliac too. I've glutened myself a few times with pasta. I automatically bite spaghetti to see if it's ready twice and at Christmas I was cutting up a cheesecake. and licked my finger Wahh. It was Christmas eve I felt like a balloon on Christmas day.

FenellaMaxwell · 29/04/2020 20:28

Nooooo! DIVORCE. We don’t have normal pasta anymore, only gluten free to avoid cross contamination. The brown rice pasta And quinoa pasta is great - you can’t tell the difference! I do concede when it comes to bread - gluten free bread is on the whole vile - but we have separate toasters.

TW2013 · 29/04/2020 20:38

We were totally gluten free here (other than bread) but have had to source gluten pasta recently to save the gluten pasta. It is so strange not being able test it. Have to recruit the dc to taste 'their' pasta.

Peonyonpoint · 29/04/2020 20:45

Yes @TW2013, that’s the same as us - probably why DH was absent-minded about it. But have to guard the gf stuff atm as can be so hard to get!

Anyway, refried beans (with chipotle, corn and butternut squash... so bean chili really) were delicious and DH is still wrestling our delightful children into bed so all is well.

MitziK · 29/04/2020 21:01

Apart from the idea of GF the entire house (I know a couple of people who have done this and it works really well), there is another way to ensure that spoon incidents don't occur.

Teach your DH the easy way to cook pasta.

Boil water. Chuck pasta in. Bring back to boil. Put lid on, turn off and leave it for ten minutes. No stirring required.

pastabest · 29/04/2020 21:38

when it comes to bread - gluten free bread is on the whole vile

I would have agreed with you until we bit the bullet and ordered from The Wheatfree Bakery Direct (£7 delivery charge put us off for a long time)

Revolutionary.

It's pretty much like normal bread, we bought a deep freezer so we could order it in bulk.
