Hot tub noise overnight

The neighbours have had a hot tub installed. It seems to be running 24/7 with perhaps the odd break. I'm assuming this is to keep the water at a constant temperature. You can't hear it much during the day, but it's running all night and it is annoying. We sometimes sleep out in the back garden and it's definitely too loud to be able to do that now. It's a constant low frequency hum, like when a vehicle is parked and running its engine.

Ds2 is autistic and can't have his bedroom window open overnight as his bedroom is just across from the neighbour's hot tub.

Is this type of noise usual with these things? Would it be reasonable to expect it to be turned off overnight?

Please don't flame me, I'm not a hot tub snob and each to their own, it's just the constant noise that's causing concern.

Could you find out if they hopefully just hired it for a week, rather than purchased it.

rosiethehen · 29/04/2020 15:15

I think he's purchased it. They had to dismantle the fence to get it in.

It's normal for them to hum, and if it's turned off overnight it wouldn't be usable in the morning or for most of the rest of the day. Can you try to reframe it as white noise? Or play white noise in your son's room?

I don't think the fact you can't sleep in your garden will wash, but if it's very loud in your house and the hot tub is portable, you could ask if they could shift it somewhere less intrusive?

That does sound ridiculously annoying. If hot tubs generally make that much noise then you simply shouldn't get one if you have nearby neighbours.

It's just a small garden so there's nowhere to move it to Sad

We're all on top of each other here.

I am having the same problem with one of my neighbours. They are inconsiderate knobheads.

rosiethehen · 29/04/2020 15:36

I'm sorry to hear that @ThomasHardy

Are they a lot of work? He might get sick of it. Perhaps the novelty will wear off.

Just wait for his first electric bill!!

Is it one of those inflatable hot tubs or a proper hot tub? We have an inflatable one and I placed a cut out piece of artificial grass under the pump and that seemed to absorb the humming. We slept with our windows open and couldn't hear it at night and we have a very small garden also. Unfortunately the pump needs to be on all the time to keep the temperature constant but also to keep the water circulating and clean.

rosiethehen · 29/04/2020 15:47

It's a solid type one. It has a wooden frame surrounding it. Perhaps it needs some sort of sound proofing. It's just sitting on the patio.

Ours does hum a bit too. We don’t have any neighbours though! Can turn it off it have it on a timer but it keeps the water filter running

Lailaloo747 · 29/04/2020 15:50

We have a jacuzzi and unfortunately it does make a constant humming noise then when it needs to come up to temperature it’s really quite loud....
We only have one here because we don’t have any neighbours. If we did, we wouldn’t have got one because I can imagine how irritating it would be!

I like the idea of putting the cut -grass- glass under it.

crustycrab · 03/05/2020 22:31

I don't think they'll know you regularly sleep in the garden. That's unusual.

Ours never hums all the time, if it is working that hard then they have lousy insulation.
