PlayStation v Xbox - DS bday, which one? Help!

Hi everyone,

Boring question alert...our 11 year old (nearly) has his bday next week.

He loves Fortnite and plays on his Switch around the house. His younger brother broke the dock on that, the tit, so we need to send it off to get mended.

He's now asking for a console and we're wondering which one may work best for him.

I've seen a PS4 pro on Game for £350 and it has some Fortnite bits and Now TV which will allow him to watch the telly in his room (he currently can't).

Do you think that's an ok price?

I am not very technically minded - can you tell 😆

TIA for your thoughts,
MM x x

£350 is the standard price for a playstation right now, and for Xbox too, so yes, that's about right.

However, both the PS4 and XBox one lines (ie. the current generation) are now showing their age, and the PS5 and XBox X are going to be released in October, so I wouldn't get one of these consoles at the minute. If you do, he's going to be on a legacy device within four months or so, and probably be making noises about the next generation!

Can you not put him off until Christmas for a new console, and spend a bit more then to get the next generation?

Thanks DadOnAHotTinRoof,

A friend did mention the upgrade, but we're a little bit stuck for next week 😆

Thanks again x

What do his friends use?

Pipandmum · 29/04/2020 22:49

Ask him as kids have a definite preference for one over the other.

gamerchick · 29/04/2020 22:50

I'd ask him. What do his friends use?

I wouldn't worry about the next gen apart from the current should come down in price. They'll still be supported for quite a while.

gamerchick · 29/04/2020 22:52

And anyway, there's no way I'd recommend getting a console fresh out. They're always stroppy fuckers for a while IME. Best to wait for a bit anyway.

Xbox one X is the top of the Xbox range at the moment, it has 4K capabilities so needs to be on a 4K tv other than that I don’t think it’s much different to the standard Xbox one. Xbox one S looks a good price, if it’s his first console any of them will be a step up in gaming experience from the switch. Can’t comment on the PS as I haven’t had one of those in years. As others have said ask him his preference, some people feel very strongly one is better than the other!

SlightyJaded · 29/04/2020 23:12

I would see what his friends are using.

DS (13) has an X-Box One and is perfectly happy with this and not asking for an upgrade (he has had it about two years). All his friends are on X Box One and have the subscription that lets them play together and chat. He mostly plays Fortnite/Fifa and a few others but for him, the ability to play in a group and chat is the most important bit.

Ask him.

AnxiousElephant77 · 29/04/2020 23:20

Mainly Xbox here but I would caveat this by saying 90% of the arguments in our house are Xbox related.

God speed!

We went with the Xbox (large memory) and he is thrilled! Thank you all for your advice.

Steak on the BBQ and a garden meal later, then a bonfire,
S'mores and satellite spotting in blankets on the lawn.

My lovely boy is 11.

When did that happen?!

Sounds lovely. Goes by in a blink, won't be soon until he is 21. Enjoy these special times ❤️

Ah thanks for coming back. So pleased he was happy
