So, er, how old is/was your DC when their schoolwork baffled you?

It may have been a while ago but I did more than my share of getting educated.
My child is only year 3 and their school work makes my brain hurt. Just me? Grin

I'd love to say it's that they teach things differently these days...but I fear I've been secretly atrophying! Anyone else struggling not to lose the respect of their offspring?

DD1 is doing computer science for gcse. Despite her explaining what it is several times I still don't actually understand what the subject actually is.

Kittykatmacbill · 28/04/2020 19:26

I have terrible handwriting - I joke that I must have learnt to write copying graffiti - ‘home schooling’ cursive script for the p2 has been exhausting.

bookmum08 · 28/04/2020 19:28

Reception/Year 1. They kept saying 'number sentences'. Turns out that meant 'sums'. Took me an awfully long time to realise that.

Quite early on! Funnily enough I can’t remember much of what I was taught in school 30 years ago...

pitterpatterrain · 28/04/2020 19:36

Split digraphs - what?

MutteringDarkly · 28/04/2020 19:38

My child kindly suggested we didn't try the additional maths "mastery" challenge today, with a little shake of her head. (Loving "number sentences" btw. And I work in tech and have no real idea what one does in computer science classes...)

I had to look up what an 'expanded noun phrase' was for Y1. I have an English language AS level, you would think I could cope with KS1 English. Mind you, DD has no idea either, I had to do a lot of 'use a describing word about the thing'

Hermie12 · 28/04/2020 19:45

My 5 year old has been teaching me what digraph and trigraphs are Grin

Ridingthegravytrain · 28/04/2020 19:46

Part part whole models. And bar models. Why make sums so complicated?!

Pippapotomus · 28/04/2020 19:47

They had a meeting to explain digraphs and trigraphs as so many of us were confused by the yr1 homework. Most of us were still confused after the meeting tbh.

LunariaAlba · 28/04/2020 19:50

Long division
It's not long division anymore. I don't know what it is. I may have been told but if I was it's just evaporated from my memory.
DD1 shouted at me 'that's not how we do it mummy' and at that point she and the teachers were on their own and for the most part have been ever since.

TyroSaysMeow · 28/04/2020 19:52

I started having to look things up when she was in year one. I have a degree in English, but they didn't really teach grammar when I was at school.

My sister's doing well on the maths though, she didn't have to ask me to explain it to her so she could explain it to my niece until the latter was in year six.

Donkeytail · 28/04/2020 19:54

My childrens school teaches in a language I don't speak. It has always baffled me.

SimonJT · 28/04/2020 19:54

Digraphs and trigraphs! Then we got split digraphs, wtaf.

I’m a 32 year old professional, I’ve never needed to know what they are 🤷🏽‍♂️

fascinated · 28/04/2020 19:55

Today — apparently an adverb is not just an adjective that describes a verb? Who knew?!

SunnyStroll · 28/04/2020 19:57

DS1 was in reception the first time I had to google his maths. I have maths A level!

Greenandcabbagelooking · 28/04/2020 19:57

I am a teacher and am frequently confused by the way my Year 7s do things. Carroll diagram anyone?

I’d call it a two way table..

RightOnTheEdge · 28/04/2020 19:58

My dd is 9 I feel like I don't understand English when I have to help with her spag work. I've never spent so much time on Google and I'm learning so much from BBC bitesize 😂
I actually did pretty well at school and now I'm wondering what they actually taught me I feel like a total dunce Confused

ILiveInSalemsLot · 28/04/2020 20:00

Some of my dcs primary school worked baffled me. They did maths in a totally different way. And don’t ask me about all the grammar stuff.

I always thought I was good at maths and am able to help yr 10 Ds until he started asking me about surds. WTH are they??

sproutsandparsnips · 28/04/2020 20:01

I have A level English and I don't know what a 'fronted adverbial' is. I am choosing to ignore it.

Teacher12345 · 28/04/2020 20:01

@pitterpatterrainSplit digraphs - what?
I got caught with this too. It is just the magic "e". So Cod is cod, but when you add an "e" is read with a "oh" sound "code".

Impatientwino · 28/04/2020 20:01

Yup my year 3s maths question got me earlier - I had to read it so many times before it made sense and even now I'm not quite sure Grin

Impatientwino · 28/04/2020 20:02

Oh and I had to google common nouns and proper nouns to remind myself of their definitions to be sure Confused

KittenVsBox · 28/04/2020 20:02

I cant do primary grammar.
And I totally flunk out when it came to Arabic homework - we sent that into work with DH for a translation.

However, I xan do Salems Y10 stuff- surds are just square roots/cube roots and upwards.

reluctantbrit · 28/04/2020 20:03

Y1 maths caused more than one headache. English is not my main language so I had to google what some words meant but I didn’t get the concept of how they taught simple addition, substraction and even worse division.

I have an A-Level in maths, a degree in Finance and work with numbers since nearly 30 years. KS1 maths should be easy but no.
