Home Schooling Fail

Anyone else utterly sick of trying to home school DCs who do not give a shiny shit about their learning.

Unless I literally have DD (yr 7) sat right in front of me she will not do any work or it is the absolute minimum. Even her teachers are sending messages saying they expect much more effort. She's bright but if it doesn't interest her then she won't do it Hmm

DS (yr 10) is not much better and seems oblivious to how damaging it could be to next year's GCSEs.

I've tried everything; routine, bribery, threats. I dont expect a lot but none of the independent work is particularly taxing and probably would only take an hour or so a dayNothing works and I'm so fed up of losing my shit and having to constantly nag.

Doesn't do much for my morale either when I hear all these tales about how fantastic other kids are at self-guided learning or how "they have to be told to stop working at the end of the day" Sad
Feel like a massive failure

My yr 7 DGS now hates doing work at home after 5 weeks of being ok and is making life for his wfh single mum a nightmare. The school, having recommended buying certain revision/study guides to work through, has now changed its approach and uploaded most of the individual subjects' work plans up to GCSE for them to work through - including a 90-page PowerPoint presentation aimed at the teacher. For eg, he's been set history from 1066 to the cold War and an 80 page English Lit PowerPoint assessment on the Hobbit (he doesn't have the book) without actually saying what the assessment is! An email home has said that he must complete 5 x 60min lessons a day (more than he does at school allowing for PE, art and drama) and if he doesn't the deputy head will phone home. They call it online learning but you can't edit so have to write out the questions and answers, print them and then scan them to the school. It's made my daughter realise that they mainly do facilitating and not teaching at his school and she is getting V stressed by it. DGS suffers from anxiety anyway and this pressure is destroying him. Mum has emailed school saying he will continue doing the work that was originally set which takes about 2hrs a day and says let them phone her, bring it on! Apart from an hr first thing, she cannot work from home and sit at the table teaching him, printing out and scanning. I wish I could help.

Uuurgh....French, Maths and Physics for DD today. Not her strongest subjects at the best of times and certainly not mine in terms of being able to explain the particular topics.
Teachers have just given links to several websites and videos and then instructed them to complete worksheets.

DD doesn't understand a lot of it even after watching the videos and reading the mountains of info. I certainly don't want to teach something I'm not confident myself with so we've called it a day! Just don't think this still of learning is of any benefit to her and is making both of us feel like shit Sad

We've had emails from both schools saying so long as kids are doing something every day don't worry about it. So mine are working in the mornings and then have free time (basically on laptops on Youtube/Games) in the afternoon. Has minimised stress a bit although we still have lots of wailing and quality of work is not good.

Mine have done about 30 minutes each today and even that was pretty painful. I'm so grateful that they're in Year 2 & 4 so it doesn't really matter plus we have a very 'relaxed' school. DD only had to add 3 onto different numbers, and even that took an eternity, like she was trying to answer the final question on Who wants to be a Millionaire or something!

Christ, it's so draining, I would utterly despair if they were in high school!

I needed this post we had the most amazing morning I was so proud of them then we started the homeschooling. It has completely ruined my day feel so upset now. Funnily enough the DC that caused all the upset is extremely bright( still primary aged and just doesn't care) massive song and dance about it even though would of took 20 mins max to do maths. Just sad now as feel a great day is ruined as now everyone including me is thoroughly pissed off. Sigh.
