Jerking and moving constantly whilst asleep! What’s causing this?

My DH has been working away and recently returned home. He has been back a week now and every night without fail, I have been jerking and moving constantly whilst sleeping to the point he might choose to sleep elsewhere tonight.

I have googled and can’t find anything that seems to explain it. DH says it’s as if I’m having bad dreams and I’m scared. My dreams have been extremely vivid the last few days. They haven’t been nightmares, they have just been your standard random dreams.

I’m just concerned that this is happening every single night. We are both exhausted as DH is having to constantly wake me because of how much I’m moving.

Has anyone else experienced anything like this?

Thanks.

No idea what causes it but my DH does it, doesn't recall dreaming but I wake him when he is doing it.

I do this when I'm seriously overtired x

I do this when I'm very tired or anxious. Wake up clinging to the edge of the bed in case I fall out etc. I also sit bolt upright in bed still fast asleep about 8 times every night.

DH is a very patient man.

I do this. Doc thinks it’s caused by anxiety. It is worse when I’m overtired.

My DH used to do this in bed. He was exceptionally stressed at the time.

I'm like this when my anxiety levels are high, at the same time I also get that dream where you suddenly jerk awake like you've been falling and crashed.

I read an article recently that said lockdown is messing with sleep patterns.

DP does this as do many men I've had the misfortune to sleep with. Fucking annoying

Might be worth a chat with your GP? Amitryptaline for a short while might help.

Is it happening while you're asleep or while your falling asleep? It used to happen to me while falling asleep. Turns out it was caused by too much caffeine. Gotta limit my intake now.

If it is muscle twitching / jerking, try taking some powdered magnesium before bed. Mix in into some juice or water. My DH used to have terrible muscle spasms at night but this fixed them.

Foxglade · 28/04/2020 02:18

It’s called a hypnic jerk. Much like when your eyelid twitches, it happens more when you are stressed, anxious, not getting enough sleep, or overtired.

fivedogstofeed · 28/04/2020 06:23

Taking some magnesium will definitely help. It stops the twitching but also helps you sleep.
