Is an expensive washing machine worth the extra money?

Ours is on its way out. I've been looking at new ones and the price range is huge. Realistically though, I only every use two programmes so is it worth the extra money for a fancier one?

This thread is a little old now so some of the suggestions may be out of date, but if you’ve landed here looking for washing machine recommendations, we’ve recently updated our best budget washing machines page with lots of great options, as tried and tested by Mumsnet users. Just a question - does any manufacturer still make a basic basic model? Most people I know only use two, maybe three programmes at most. A very hot wash, a warm wash and a gentle (or quick) wash. Why do they make them with fifteen million different programmable options to go wrong? I want one that will boil my sheets, wash everything else and have an option to do wool for when I can't be bothered to handwash my jumpers. That's all. I don't need it to be able to do extra extra boil, multi spin, rinse hold etc. I just want the next step up from 'wash it in the sink and put it through the mangle'.

Are they still available?

I've had my Miele washing machine for 13 years now, has been fault free during this time, I wouldn't be without it, always washes really well, definitely worth it.

So I've bought a pretty basic hotpoiint one but even that has 15 programmes, of which I'll use 3 at the most. I couldn't find any more basic with a large capacity. If its not great, it was only £200...
