Good things to come out of being on lockdown

My kids have learnt the joys of staying indoors and playing in the garden - they would always nag to go to soft play, trampoline park etc but I think lockdown has given them a renewed appreciation for home life.

I've caught up on reading and have read 4 books since lockdown

The gorgeous weather - I'm not much of a scientist but I'm pretty sure no planes being in the sky has contributed to the beautiful weather we've had lately

No space invaders in the supermarket- for me this is bliss, I hate when people are half a step behind you in the queue

Easier avoiding people I dislike Grin

I love, love sleeping in until 5 min before I have to start work as opposed to the alarm going off at 630 the racing around trying to get the dog walked, the kids up, fed, clothed and out the door to get to daycare then work. As a result everyone's able to stay up later and there is much less rush rush to our routine.

I wish I could work 9-4 - I would get just as much done if not more and would be so much happier.

ChasingRainbows19 · 26/04/2020 22:42

Still working full time out of the house but long days so 3/4 days off a week as normalbut on my days off.
A month of lockdown and no pubs, meals out or day trips and I still like/love my partner a lot. Still finding things to talk about and watch or do. Not even little niggles.
I've read a book. I've not managed to read one in ages.
Drawing : nothing amazing just cartoons
Got the garden ready for summer.
More regular contact with my family and close friends. More texts and calls than normal as can't see each other.
Finding out people's true colours... nothing like a lockdown to see those!

ExCwmbranDweller · 26/04/2020 22:45

I think I may have achieved the Mumsnet chicken, tomorrow the stock I made from it's picked bare carcass will be the base for it's 5th family meal when I use the stock from it for soup. We all have a much greater appreciation for the food in our house and making the most of what we have rather than shooting up to the shop to appease the latest craving.

Time spent with my nearly 18 year old, he's been amazing company and I utterly treasure the time I'm getting one on one talking with him, I know soon he will be off out of the nest and the extra hours getting to know the grown up him feel like the biggest gift I could ever have.

Getting 8 hours sleep a night!

Makemedoit · 26/04/2020 22:47

Well done everyone. Am feeling jealous that you have all done so much. I am a key worker and working more hours than ever. Not even Easter bank holidays off.

Egghead68 · 26/04/2020 22:48

I’m enjoying eating all the garlic and onions I want without worrying about smelly breath.

MiniChoc · 26/04/2020 22:49

Thanks to FaceTime I've been having PROPER catch ups with friends I'd not prioritised before. Just from being too busy etc. Now we have the gift of TIME

MiniChoc · 26/04/2020 22:49

I've also saved a fortune on eating out Blush

Timetospare · 26/04/2020 22:54

My 86 year old mum has learnt how to video call, after years of trying to persuade her to give it a go.

scrivette · 26/04/2020 22:56

I love not having to do the school run and rushing between school/nursery and work.
I have been doing Joe Wicks very morning, I didn't ever do any exercise so it's a massive change for me and I really enjoy it.

GlummyMcGlummerson · 26/04/2020 22:59

So how do you explain the week of predicted rain?

Hmm

As I say it's not an exact science, but I suppose in short - the effect on the environment is a huge positive

I think I've become better at sorting out the recyclable stuff from the trash ( maybe more time available to do this )
I'm gardening and sorting out the garden
Clearing out junk in the cupboards

I'm hoping that general public will become more self reliant on themselves as far as treating small injury / minor ailments at home rather than often pointless trips to a & e / drs

LilacTree1 · 26/04/2020 23:04

OP

😂 at you making a face at me

It’s a fair point I was making!

MrsAvocet · 26/04/2020 23:56

My kitchen is cleaner and tidier than it has been for years.
I am cooking everything from first principles and we have had loads of new recipes. I have to confess I have been a teeny bit dishonest though. I have served new things that might have previously been rejected by the faddy teenager, saying that the ingredients were the only things in the shop. As he genuinely believes there are no alternatives he has eaten - and enjoyed - a lot of new things.
I am being a lot less wasteful in general, but particularly with regard to food waste.

ALovelyBitOfSquirrel · 27/04/2020 00:12

Peaceful days in our beautiful garden. Pottering about the house, endless time with the pets (DC are all grown up) getting those jobs done that we never seem to get around to. Not getting up early. Just doing what I please really. Afternoon naps on the sofa, reading, tv. It's absolute bliss.

Charles11 · 27/04/2020 00:18

I feel a bit sad that I can’t add anything to this thread.
It hasn’t been bad or anything but with 3 kids and a dh who’s been wfh but very long hours and not being able to do my pt work, it’s all been busy just coasting along.
And I’ve gained a few lbs rather than losing it!
I am going to have to up my game for the remaining lockdown so I can come back and add something.

Poppybeaumydarlinggirl · 27/04/2020 00:19

Just not having to clock watch is great!!

milksoffagain · 27/04/2020 00:28

No local church bell ringers practicing their art at a tuneless 100 decibels for 3 hours each and every Tuesday evening. Wonderfully peaceful and we can hear each other speak now

FoxyBadger · 27/04/2020 00:34

Life so much less hectic; on furlough and I'm lucky that I can swallow a 20% pay cut. So much more worth it for lie ins, no commute or early school runs and so much more quality family time.
Have realised how much I really hate my job and what a rut I was stuck in.
Probably one of few people hoping for redundancy out of this. Really don't want to go back to my job.

Tillygetsit · 27/04/2020 00:46

Not having to tidy up because people are coming round.

LatteLover12 · 27/04/2020 08:21

I've been able to relax and enjoy my pregnancy. No rushing around or commuting. No shuttling the children around to school and clubs and definitely no clock watching.

I appreciate I'm lucky to have a supportive partner and a nice home with a garden to spend this time in too. DP and I have spent a lot of time saying how lucky we feel.

I've been baking and reading more and my boys are old enough to entertain themselves once the school work is done.

If anything, I'll come out of this with a greater appreciation for everything we have. My life hasn't always been like this so it's very sweet.

4amWitchingHour · 27/04/2020 08:31

“ I'm not much of a scientist but I'm pretty sure no planes being in the sky has contributed to the beautiful weather we've had lately”

It definitely isn't. It's just an anticyclone.

Less pollution is great though.

delilabell · 27/04/2020 11:24

But the sky is bluer because of lack of pollution whether its warmer or not.
Also op has made a really positive post and people are still being picky on it!
No clock watching is a massively beautiful think I totally agree. I love being at work (key worker) but in the days I'm not, spending time at home and not worrying that I've got to do things now is beautiful

blue25 · 27/04/2020 11:27

Lots of time to enjoy the garden
Got back into reading
Saved loads of money

saints11 · 27/04/2020 11:28

The parts of my town I have discovered whilst on my daily walk.
The cleaner air.
Less noise.

SweetPetrichor · 27/04/2020 12:12

I've got out on my bike a lot more.
The pace of life has slowed and it's quite pleasant.
