Cookbook recommendations

I’m an ok cook but definitely stuck in a rut due to lack of time and a fussy preteen.

As I’ve got a bit more free time I’d like to try something new. Fussy DS will just have to cope. 😁

So if you could recommend one cookbook which would you suggest?

Rick Stein - Venice to Istanbul. Everything we have made has been delicious!

Thanks, will take a look!

Most cookbooks have many if not all their recipes online or on you tube. So try one or two recipes from a few different books before making a purchase. That's usually enough for me to see whether I'm going to "get on" with the recipes.

Some of my favourites include HFW's Veg, Made in India by Meera Sodha and Jamie's 30 minute meals.

Ainsley Harriot Friends and Family. I've made tons of stuff out of it and not had to buy any special ingredients.

Second Diana Henry, it’s tasty, reasonable ingredients and sensible, and yes, so tasty. Lots of her recipes online to look at.

The roasting tin series (particularly the quick one) and 5 ingredients Jamie Oliver

Third Diana Henry. My favourites of hers for everyday general family cooking are Food from Plenty and Cook Simple.

She has another one just called "simple" but I don't like it as much as "cook simple"!

Prue Leith's cookery bible. Has all the basics plus some complicated stuff too.

ScorchioScorchio · 27/04/2020 00:24

Another Diana Henry fan. Her recipes are delicious. Kitchen by Nigella Lawson is also very good.

NotMyUsualNameNoSiree · 27/04/2020 00:39

I fifth Diana Henry, we've got five of her books and they are easily out most-used and most-loved cookbooks.

Marcella Hazan, The Essentials Of Classic Italian Cooking.

A recent addition to our household; it’s transformed dinnertime, reignited DH’s interest in cooking, and we now all refer to it as ‘The Bible’. Highly recommended.

RamblinRosie · 27/04/2020 02:22

Anything by Nigel Slater, he offers all kinds of options on each recipe. And his recipes are bomb proof.

Check out this site, lots of ideas and really good “family” recipes:

Thanks everyone!

Embarrassingly I have at least 4 of the books mentioned. I’m thinking I should go back through them before buying even more.

Does anyone know if the cookbook club on here is still going? And if not would anyone like to restart it?

Restarting it sounds like a great idea.

I saw her talk about healthy family eating while demonstrating three recipes, which were all refined carb heavy, and two had both bacon and cheese. None of the three recipes were what I would consider remotely healthy. Did she just chose badly, or are most of the recipes like that?

TheStuffWasBad · 28/04/2020 07:13

I love Miguel Barclays £1 meal range of books, just made the simplest pasta sauce from one of his books a couple of days ago, it was so good I think i might make it again today.
