Skinned my hand a few days ago, is there anything I can do for the pain?

I was out with the dog a few days ago and tripped over a bump in the road at the same time as the dog surging forward because she spotted another dog, she knocked me to the ground and dragged me for a bit meaning I skinned my hand pretty badly. I washed and covered it as soon as I got back and it's only just now starting to scab over.

It feels really tight and stings like crazy, and it's my dominant hand so it's rendered me fairly useless. I can't hold anything heavier than an empty mug and I can't grip anything. I'm changing the dressing twice a day. Is there anything else I can do? It's not deep enough to need stitches.

Until it's got a layer of skin over it, id say no.

I'd also recommend leaving it uncovered for a while between dressing changes. It needs air.

I'd leave it uncovered too, it will help the scab. Are you sure it's fully clean?

Soak it in salt water for a bit - soften it up, then let it dry in the air so the scab forms on its own.

You could apply antiseptic cream to soften it and reduce the itching as it heals as well.

A hard scab will reduce your hand movement even more.
Apply a thin hydrocolloid dressing (Duoderm for example) buy online or at a pharmacy. Use a dressing larger than the wound and either put on a bandage or wear a glove over it to keep it in place. You can cut it to shape but should be at least 2cm larger than the wound if you can, mould it into place
Leave it in place as long as possible, leave it alone!
The wound will become wetter before it starts to improve because it will debride dead tissue and assist any grit or gravel out.
And it helps with the pain.

I did something similar and found that holding refrigerated glass bottles eased the pain. I bought some cotton gloves to cover them while they were healing as they looked like something out of a horror film.

Apart from one small area that the scab came off while holding the dog lead and she pulled, none of it scarred.

Wee is good for healing skin, apparently.
Report back.

I took a huge chunk out of the heel of my hand earlier this year 😬 it was incredibly painful. What really helped was the hydrocolloid dressings, changed twice daily.

I honestly thought I was going to have a manky hand forever, but it’s healed beautifully.

Thanks for the advice, I've put antiseptic ointment on it now and left the bandages off for a while, tomorrow i'll take a walk over to the pharmacy and get the hydrocolloid dressing.

Fecking dog doesn't even have the decency to look guilty.

If it’s keeping you from sleeping you could take some paracetamol, if you have them.

I cut my hand badly a few years ago and it throbbed. I liked to picture it as the repair process happening so I could think of it as a positive.

sueelleker · 26/04/2020 19:25

If you can get it, Savlon Duo gel has a local anaesthetic in it.

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 26/04/2020 19:37

Just keep slathering it with Savlon. The pain should fade as soon as it scabs over properly, try and leave it uncovered overnight.
