I need to check if most people would think this is disgusting or perfectly normal :o
I have a cake to fill and decorate and really trying to avoid the shops today

Afaik, because of the sugar content it should be fine. Bit like how sugar doesn’t go off ever but has a bbd

Dreamersandwishers · 26/04/2020 08:34

Oh gosh yes. My mum made her own and never dated it. Kept for ever.

StealthPolarBear · 26/04/2020 08:34

That's what I thought, but my mum would be horrified :) thanks

Yes. Would use.

missmouse101 · 26/04/2020 08:35

Yes!

AdaColeman · 26/04/2020 08:36

As long as it hasn’t gone mouldy, it will be fine to use.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 26/04/2020 08:37

As long as it isnt mouldy.
Which is unlikely if it hasn't been opened.

I am not a mould-scraper-offer but jam has a best before date rather than use by.
So you just use your judgement.

StealthPolarBear · 26/04/2020 08:37

You lot are brilliant. Along with this and the recipe for hummus without tahini you are keeping me home, protecting the NHS and saving lives :o and reducing food waste in addition.

OP posts:
Ricekrispie22 · 26/04/2020 08:37

If it hasn’t been opened.

ChewChewIsMySpiritAnimal · 26/04/2020 08:38

As long as it looks and smells ok i would. Sugar is a preservative.

StealthPolarBear · 26/04/2020 08:38

Yes sorry still unopened, little poppy button depressed as it should be

HasaDigaEebowai · 26/04/2020 08:39

It'll be absolutely fine. Most tinned and jarred food lasts way beyond the BBE date. Ive used jam much, much older than this

StealthPolarBear · 26/04/2020 08:39

Actually I think what threw me is that it is bb 16 August 2018, which is rather precise. But it's just jam.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 26/04/2020 08:39

Tahini is a bastard imo- nasty bitter stuff.
(Also dp is allergic to sesame)

What was the recipe?
I substitute almond butter but we are scarily low

PotteringAlong · 26/04/2020 08:40

I’ve just opened a jar of jam I made in 2014! It’s fine!

SkaLaLand · 26/04/2020 08:41

As it's still sealed and sterile it will be absolutely fine.

StealthPolarBear · 26/04/2020 08:44

hummus no tahini
Looks suspiciously like the normal recipe without tahini

Pipandmum · 26/04/2020 08:49

My friend just ate some apple jelly I made in 2016 and said it was yum. Too bad I had just binned all the stuff I made dated before 2018 😭😭

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 26/04/2020 09:14

Thanks, SPB!

StealthPolarBear · 26/04/2020 12:53

I've made it, it's OK but a bit bland (made it early in the hopes the flavour would develop).
Don't do what I did and chuck all the water in at the start, add it as it's needed!

I've used loads of out of date food recently. At the start of lockdown I cleared out my kitchen cupboards to see what I had got lurking at the back in case of emergencies. I used a Best Before October 2015 bread mix last week and it maybe didn't rise quite as much as it should have but it tasted fine and we aren't dead yet. Grin Loads of food gets thrown out unnecessarily because of best before dates. I am fussy with meat, especially chicken, but otherwise don't stress too much about dates.
