If there is such a thing .. why are they so more unflattering than riding hats ? 🤔 thanks

@EstebanTheMagnificent hang on, hang on - no one is trying to put anyone off. I’m sorry if I’ve said the wrong thing - it was only because OP mentioned a road bike specifically (in a later post). I do not at all want to upset her or anyone else, I just wanted to recommend appropriate kit for the job. I’m sure there are similar considerations in horse riding.

I was once a newbie joining a super keen cycling family of in laws so I know how it feels to be a bit intimidated and I didn’t mean to do that. The vast vast majority of cyclists I have met just want to share their enthusiasm and encourage other people to enjoy the sport they love.

If you’d feel more comfortable to start with in one of the more enclosed helmets, then try that and you can always get something else later on if you want and/ or you get more into cycling.

Thanks for the link to Cyclechic.

I'm currently wearing DS's dragon design helmet as he grew out of it

I've seen some nice gold and silver ones.
I have a monumentally awful bog standard one with all the vents. Luckily I rarely wear as I can stick to cycle paths.

I've just been looking at cycle helmets online all morning! I can't believe how expensive some of them are.

There are definitely some with special pony-tail holders.

Loads of different shapes. I'm trying to work out if there are any safe ones that are quite round at the back, because I carry an instrument on my back that is tall enough to touch my helmet, and with my current one, if I stand up straight, they collide, so I always seem to be holding my head slightly forward. It's not so bad when I'm actually riding the bike leaning forward, but if I stop or sit up straight or when I'm parking etc, it gets annoying. I'm not sure whether all helmets will do that, though, or if it's just mine that has a bit of a 'tail' at the back.

I do think the rounded ones look less good, though!

Some of the nicer ones don't come in many colours.

And yes, shame the shops are shut, as I need to try them. There are a couple of shops open here, but generally I don't find the shops carry a huge selection - there are so many more online.

Bimbleberries all helmets that are sold in this country have to be CE marked and meet the required safety standards so anything you buy will be "safe". Though of course its not quite that simple, much like kids carseats etc.....there are differences but there are no "unsafe" CE marked helmets. A lot of expensive helmets are pricey because they are lighter or more comfortable than cheaper ones rather than because they are actually safer, though personally I would always go for something with MIPS or similar and an adjustable retention system. Fit is one of the biggest safety factors. With the retention system tightened up, you should be able to bend your head fowards without the straps fastened and the helmet should stay put. And adjust it every single time you ride. Helmets described as urban helmets are generally more round in shape so that might be where to start. Also some BMX or dirt jump helmets.

I tried a nice looking one once. Was heavy and uncomfortable.

The kask that I left on a train last year is my all time favourite.

thanks, MrsAvocet, I'll take a look at the urban ones. I tried on a Liv one this morning as there are a couple of shops open here, but not with very big selections. It was quite rounded. Not as comfortable perhaps as some of the others, but the shape was better. So I think they will be out there, just have to try/order and see.
