So sad to hear of the passing of this amazing lady.

A fellow weegie by birth, a staunch advocate of consumer and patient rights. She did a hell of a lot to get bowel cancer patients in particular the diagnosis and care they need.

Condolences to her family at this difficult time. Sad

Very sad - and after surviving cancer too.

Graphista · 25/04/2020 14:28

I know 2 kinds too, but maybe the toll on her body is what contributed to the stroke? Hard to know.

Just loved her as a consumer and health advocate, she didn't faff about and was very clear on her opinions.

Aw, sorry to hear this. Lovely no nonsense lady.

thefemaleJoshLyman · 25/04/2020 14:35

I met her and spent time in her company when I was a teenager. A lovely lady. So sad.

Graphista · 25/04/2020 14:39

@thefemaleJoshLyman aww wow how nice for you. I love hearing that celebs we like are nice in real life too.

I was a bit thrown by this as she'd been doing the paper reviews on the BBC news channel regularly during lock down from home and seemed fine. Her husband was also doing it and saying that she'd set it up as she was the brains of the two of them. Knowing what her curtains look like made it feel more like I knew her Blush

Graphista · 25/04/2020 14:44

Strokes can hit out of the blue though sadly. Must have been a shock for the family too.

@Graphista She was the quiz master in a competition I was in. Very warm in real life.

SophieB100 · 25/04/2020 14:45

Very sad news indeed.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 25/04/2020 14:48

Yes Graph it must have been entirely unexpected for them.

LarkDescending · 25/04/2020 14:51

Yes, I too was very sorry to hear this news. She did a huge amount of good work including raising awareness (and reducing the stigma) of bowel cancer.

There was a nice tribute by Sophie Raworth who knew her as a family friend for many years.

Graphista · 25/04/2020 14:55

I thought she came across as someone who genuinely cared and would be warm and open in real life.

She had a cracking but rarely publicly displayed laugh iirc.

Oh how did I miss this.
It came up on someone’s Fb.
I’m so sad. I had amazing respect for her.
I felt everything was in the grip of a firm pair of hands when she was presenting issues that need to be addressed.
I’m very concerned about the last paragraph..my dh is on blood thinner meds

So young too, 72 is no age

That's very sad. I recall her husband, John Stapleton, describing when they first met, 'I turned and saw the most beautiful woman I'd ever seen'. This was in an interview a few years ago and he clearly still felt the same so many years later. She was a remarkable woman and a relentless campaigner who will be greatly missed.

Smartcasual · 02/05/2020 12:59

A really fantastic woman. RIP.

I liked the way she was no nonsense and didn't make the reporting all about her. Also, she lobbied and launched lots of household safety legislation that we take for granted now; shorter kettle leads and colder oven doors among them.

Smartcasual · 02/05/2020 13:01

It must be very hard to be grieving alone under lockdown, especially after a sudden death Sad
