Fucking ants in kitchen.

So I go into the kitchen this morning to find dozens of ants swarming all over the floor. I live in a second floor flat, but my kitchen has a balcony just outside it. I've lived here for nearly 37 years and can honestly say I have NEVER had this problem before!
I can't make out where they're coming in,and I can't put ant powder down as I have a cat. My kitchen has no door on it so I can't even shut her out.
Has anyone else with pets had this, and how have you dealt with it without risking poisoning your cat?!
By the way,I never leave any unwrapped food around (apart from cat food) to attract them. Could it be the cat food that's drawn them in?

Sorry for having a non constructive message as I don't know the answer, but the exact same thing has happened to me. Started on Wednesday, never had ants in the 6 years I've lived here. I've put some white vinegar in some places and wiped the skirting boards with it, after seeing a tip on good housekeeping. Maybe a bit too soon to tell whether it's working.

The bastards are everywhere

This happened to me the other day! OH left half an onion on the side after he made dinner and loads of ants were on it in the morning! I sprayed bleach on them and cleaned the side and (touch wood) haven't seen any since. No idea where they came from as we are on the first floor and have tiny roof windows

Candy150 · 24/04/2020 20:57

They can get in anywhere. I used Ant Stop, it’s in a little container so pets can’t eat it. The ant eats it and take it back to their nest. They didn’t come back. It definitely works.

You need a bait station or two. You can buy them in the supermarket. They're like a little round pot with tiny holes. The ants go in, get the poison and take it back to their colonies. Usually sorts things and pet safe.

Our old house was terrible for ants, white vinegar will kill them in the first instance an
but chances are they will come back. Get an ant stop bait station they work a treat.

Ants appear to have made an attempt to take over my living room too! I found the teeny tiny hole that they had made their way through and put a load of baby powder over it. Seems to have done the trick. Not sure if this is safe with pets though.

I found ants tramping up the hall into the kitchen and up into the bin last Sunday. Horrified, but it was just like any cartoon scene involving them. Ordered Home Defence Ant Stop! Bait Station from Amazon which arrived yesterday and set it down by the radiator in the hall which was near to where they were getting in through the front door. No live ants today and hoovered up a few dead ones scattered in the hall.

It has worked for me.

I have used these twice now (different houses) and they have worked quickly both times.

gatsbylove · 24/04/2020 21:04

Not sure the link works but it was Ant Stop! Bait Station

Undies1990 · 24/04/2020 21:06

I have read that if you sprinkle cinnamon around the area they are getting in, they won't come back. Much better to use that if you have a cat.

JimmyTheWeed · 24/04/2020 21:08

Thanks everyone! I will investigate the ant bait station.

How weird! I've had ants this week too. With 2 young dc I didn't want to use anything too harsh. After a bit of googling I cleaned with zoflora and then sprayed more of it in any gaps. Seems to have stopped them (fingers crossed).

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 24/04/2020 21:26

Table salt on any patios to the property.

StandardPoodle · 25/04/2020 19:02

I've found lemon juice along where they're getting in is a great deterrent.

JimmyTheWeed · 25/04/2020 19:39

Lemon juice? I'll give that a try before my ant bait thing arrives.

Apologies for resurrecting an oldish thread, but how did you get on with your ant removal? Found a few in our kitchen today - never seen them before in over 10 years if being in this house. Did the ant bait station work?
