Afternoon energy slump cure?

I have always suffered from a big energy dip from about 1pm to 4pm. It's really quite unpleasant, I feel mentally spaced out and physically wobbly, as if someone has pulled the bones out of my body. I can't concentrate on anything. I do try to avoid carby lunches with varying success. I have also noticed when dieting that if I'm fasting it doesn't seem to happen as much. But I can't fast every day! Has anyone found anything that alleviates the slump? Because I'm home now with less to distract me I am all the more aware of it.

Coffee. An espresso after lunch works wonders.

This is definitely not what you want to hear, but exactly what you're describing was the beginning of about a year of health issues for me.

I was permanently exhausted, unable to focus, had persistent nausea throughout the day, and lost about 15% of my bodyweight in a very short period of time (couple of months).

I had to go through a whole hoopla of invasive tests and ended up going to see an excellent nutritionist who nailed the issue in 2 sessions.

Turned out I had developed multiple food intolerances (lactose, gluten and fructose) and ended up on a low-FODMAP diet for 6 months, after which I started weaning myself back on to different foods.

Try a few days completely gluten-free and see what happens. Then try a few days lactose-free, and notice the results again. Not deeply scientific, but probably the best you can do under current conditions.
