What happens when a leg ulcer gets this bad? Warning, photo attached

I have posted before about my Dads leg.

He is 69, has stage 4 cancer and was receiving end of life care in his own home. Since Covid-19 he has not allowed any carers or district nurses into his home as he is terrified of catching it. His leg has gotten steadily worse and I'm worried what will happen. They have tried compression, debrisoft lolly, manuka wraps and packing the wound. He is alone, I am on the other side of the UK and I have two young dc, he won't let me visit or move in with him for lockdown. He chainsmokes in the house also and my DD has asthma so it's not ideal.

Is there an effective treatment for an ulcer this big? The black part is on the outside of his ankle and it's huge. The photo only shows part of the top. The other photo is the inside of the same leg. He uses a wheelchair but can take a few steps with help.

Although that looks bad, I just wanted to reassure you that they can get better. My mum had one twice the size on her leg, I hadn’t seen the true extent of it till we went on holiday together last sept, when I took off the dressing it was awful, grey/greenish fluid oozing out. I was sure it wasn’t right, the district nurses where we were came out and said it was ok, and redressed it. I still wasn’t convinced, it stunk to high heaven and was unbearable on the journey home and got district nurses out again day after we got home, they also said it was fine, in fact they said it was the best they’d seen it!! Baffling to me as grey and green oozy fluid did not look normal, however I am not medically qualified! I honestly thought she was on track to lose her leg.

They dressed her leg every few days in special pads things, with wadding and bandage over the top. Now, over 6m later they are almost completely healed and she doesn’t need any dressings on them.

The keeping it elevated is the best advice, also to try and keep dry-has he got one of those waterproof sock things to wear when he’s showing/washing?
