Dropped broccoli in washing up water - bin it?

WhyNotMe40 · 23/04/2020 14:01

Or just rinse and cook as normal.
It was very soapy/strong as I was soaking stuff and fumbled the shopping bag - broccoli took a tumble in. I have rinsed it but the water is not pooling/beading off the crown like water normally does off broccoli. So I'm wondering if I've ruined it....

Any opinions?

I'd still use it. I'd bring it to the boil though rather than for example a stir fry.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 23/04/2020 14:03

Nah, rinse and cook, 'twill be fine. I'm assuming a quick dunk and not a half hour soak before you noticed? I'll be honest, even if the latter I'd have to think about it!

Rinse and cook - boiling water will solve this.

Rinse it through and it’ll be fine...the water probably isn’t beading on it because the washing up liquid has washed off weed killer/chemical residue which is only a good thing

lucysmam · 23/04/2020 14:05

Rinse and cook!

I quite often manage to drop at least one piece of cooked veg into my washing up water as I drain them & just rinse and plonk back with the rest.

WhyNotMe40 · 23/04/2020 14:06

Was only a minute or two before I noticed (dumped shopping on the side then had to immediately run off to intervene in a sibling duel....)
It is already rinsed. I'll just rinse again before cooking and probably boil rather than stir fry as suggested.

God home schooling is hell today. Is it too early for cider?

I dropped a slice of cooked carrot into the sink. No actual washing up water but I was mid dinner prep and so was rinsing/washing as I went etc. I grabbed carrot, rinsed it, and thew it straight back into the pot - it was my last carrot and I wasn't losing so much as a single slice damnit!!

ReadilyAvailable · 23/04/2020 14:11

I can’t imagine doing anything other than giving it a wash then treating it like broccoli that hadn’t tried to do the washing up.

SissySpacekAteMyHamster · 23/04/2020 14:12

I'd cook it and not mention it to the kids.

RuffleCrow · 23/04/2020 14:13

Just give it a good rinse and use as normal. Are you new to cooking/ the world of vegetables?

RedskyAtnight · 23/04/2020 14:15

I'd rinse it and use.
Aren't there loads of people disinfecting everything these days anyway?

CaptainMyCaptain · 23/04/2020 14:17

The washing up liquid breaks the surface tension of the water that is why it isn't beading as you expect. Rinse it, the broccoli will be fine.

1forAll74 · 23/04/2020 14:17

The veg will be fine, and super clean ha ha. I have done this before, with cabbage leaves, Kale and spinach, you simply can't throw any nice veg away.

BreconBeBuggered · 23/04/2020 14:27

I thought that's what people were doing already. Except me, for I am a skanky bitch.

Thefaceofboe · 23/04/2020 14:35

I can’t believe there’s a thread on this

I think lockdown has rendered people unable to function normally Grin

CaptainMyCaptain · 23/04/2020 15:04

I think people forget where vegetables come from - out of the earth covered in muck.

Keepitup · 23/04/2020 15:06

I've been purposely washing my veg in mild, soapy water, then rinsing it.

whatisheupto · 23/04/2020 15:09

In some countries they wash their fruit and veg in very diluted bleach as standard!

Lumene · 23/04/2020 15:11

I would boil and eat, and I’m pretty careful.

AmelieTaylor · 23/04/2020 15:14

You'll fart bubbles but you'll be fine

🤣I'm washing all of my veg in soapy water. Seriously, it's FINE The stuff repelling the water is far worse for you!

MinesAPintOfTea · 23/04/2020 15:15

Rinse and eat. For the last few weeks our broccoli has been out of the garden, where birds and insects land on it, the plant occasionally falls over in the mud etc.

Vegetables aren't grown in sterile conditions!

MinesAPintOfTea · 23/04/2020 15:17

Also you will presumably put forks/spoons etc in your mouth that have been in that water!

I'd eat soon though, as it's hard to get dry again so it won't mildew

goingoverground · 23/04/2020 15:20

A good rinse is all it needs.

If you are really concerned and its putting you off eating it, after you've rinsed it, soak it in a bowl of water, then rinse again. Any soap on it will be so diluted after soaking it that it will be negligible.

Ragwort · 23/04/2020 15:23

Of course it’s fine.

Years ago my DM made my wedding cake, before it was iced she dropped it in the washing up .... she never told me until after it was iced and eaten Grin. We all survived .... it happened over 40 years ago, my mum is still alive at 87 now!
