Toys along the lines of a marble run/screwball/3d maze scramble but more complex...? Or sensory stuff suitable for a 9yr old?

I have a very bored 9 yr old (with ASD) who LOVES that sort of cause and effect/building pathways toy. I also have some of his DLA unspent as all his usual activities and therapies have been cancelled, so am trying to find stuff to spend it on for him to use at home!

We already have a giant marble run that lifts the marbles back up, a laser maze which you build with mirrors, and an Aquaplay canal set.

He also has sensory processing disorder and so suggestions of sensory equipment would be welcome too - we already have a peanut ball, sensory swing, trampoline, and body sock. He loves spinning and balancing!

Any suggestions?

Would he be into science circuit kits?

I got this for my nephew for his birthday and he's really enjoyed it

theres a few types. Also what about balloon cars or potato clocks?

Oooh, that looks good! We've got a simpler snap circuit set but nothing that big so that's definitely one to try and find in stock somewhere, thank you Smile

He likes things that can be taken apart and rebuilt rather than being made and finished iyswim? Lego is obviously a big hit Grin But kits that build just one thing are less his cup of tea.

Gravitrax is fab

QOFE · 23/04/2020 14:18

@Inconnu that is amazing and I think we will pre order a set for his 10th birthday, it's exactly his sort of thing!

Turing Tumble is brilliant.

Hope he loves it OP!

Another vote for Gravitrax Smile We have the starter set (which is plenty on its own) but there are plenty of add ons like a zip wire and trampoline. You can make pre designed tracks or build your own.

NoNeedToArgue · 23/04/2020 14:29

Gravity maze is absolutely brilliant

Elisheva · 23/04/2020 14:35

Boomtrix is quite good fun.

The Hexbug craze has passed but DS really enjoyed building the tracks and liked the sensation of the vibrating bugs too.

Magnetic building sets like geomagnetic are nice, but we still need to keep a close eye as he still tends to put things in his mouth.

We had cambridge brainbox snap circuits which had sets up to secondary age, still easy to put the parts together but he could make some pretty complex projects.

Would he go for something like scratch and learn the beginnings of coding? It's free and easy to use, code club has some nice simple, examples to get you started.

For the sensory side we're finding exercise kit is a good place to starts as he's got older. Resistance bands, massage rollers and balls. Lot of people like the pull up bars you can fit to the door but we don't really have a door that would work. DSs loves the body Sox in school, we've avoided duplicating the kit he has at school till now to mix things up a bit, but as it looks like hes going to be home for a while yet we might have to rethink.

Another vote for Gravitrax - we got the XXL set for DS(7) for Christmas and he has really enjoyed it. Snap Circuits and Geomags are also well liked here. I'll look into Turing Tumble I think!

Another one recommending Gravitrax. My 8 yr old loves it.

QOFE · 24/04/2020 13:00

These are all great ideas, thanks Smile

I suspect my teenager may still have her hex bugs stuff stashed away somewhere, I'll have to get her to look!

My 9 year olds love gravitrax ( though it is expensive) and also love their hex bugs. And Lego.

efeslight · 24/04/2020 14:51

Another recommendation for gravitrax

maidenover · 24/04/2020 14:59

We have gravitrax as well, I’ve just bought a second set as an extension pack so my dcs can make more complex tracks. We watched this YouTube review before we bought it
