What vitamin suppliers would you trust

I would like to buy some vitamin D. I would usually use Holland and Barrett but after two tries where the site crashes after the payment screen I gave up.

I've ordered via a different company (Lamberts) but I'm now concerned as their products were more expensive than I would have expected, they have no Facebook page, and over half their trust pilot ratings were from April 2020.

I should have given it more thought.

How do I know who I can trust. I done wang to be swallowing pills without them being made by a trustworthy reputable company.

Please can anyone offer any advice

Lamberts are good quality. My SIL swears by them and she's a herbal medicine practitioner.

oohnicevase · 23/04/2020 08:04

I ordered from holland and Barrett yesterday and it was fine .. try using a different device or safari instead of google etc.

I've been waiting for a published study of blood serum levels of vit D3 versus patient outcome and the first one that I have seen is on the net and the results show a significant correlation. Bear in mind it is not peer reviewed and does not prove causality. But I will continue with this until science proves me wrong.

The study was done by a researcher called Alipio from the Philippines. He took the data from 212 covid patients and ranked their symptoms: mild, ordinary, severe, critical.

He statistically analysed the categories and blood serum levels: normal was defined as vitamin D3 less than 30ng/ml, insufficient was in the range 21–29ng/ml and deficient as less than 20ng/ml.

Here are his results:
mild symptoms = 86% had normal levels of D3, 1.3 % had insufficient levels of D3
ordinary symptom = 26% deficient, 44% insufficient
severe = 40% deficient, 29% insufficient
critical = 32% deficient, 26% insufficient, 2% normal

OK I hear you say, it could be because those patients already had underlying conditions which rendered them deficient in the first place. But this is significant data.

Study is here:
papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=3571484

Two things really stand out for me. This is a study of 212 Philippines nationals living in SE Asia. This is one of the BAME communities who have sadly disproportionatly died of covid in the UK:
www.theguardian.com/world/2...exerts-heavy-toll-on-filipino-community-in-uk

Meanwhile, there have been only 446 deaths in the Philippines, with a population of 110 million (they had their first case of covid on 30th January!).

Secondly, the UK government has said that they will keep all the scientific data secret until after the pandemic -

'Key scientific data and advice the UK government is using to guide its covid-19 response won’t be published until the pandemic ends. Documents used to make decisions and the minutes of meetings of the Scientific Advisory Group on Emergencies (SAGE) will only be made public when the current outbreak is brought under control, according to Patrick Vallance, the government’s chief scientific adviser.''

You can buy it at your pharmacy. I do that now. I get hux d3.

Lordfrontpaw · 23/04/2020 08:08

A dietician recommended Solgar and Biocare brands.

Brogley · 23/04/2020 08:32

You can order direct from Vitabiotics. DS takes a specific multivitamin on dietician advice and I can't get it at any of the usual places at the moment but was able to order direct from them, it was on 3 for 2 as well.

WeAllHaveWings · 23/04/2020 08:34

The brand also sells through Amazon and has reviews going back a couple a years or more.

I bought DLux 3000 Vitamin D Oral Spray from Amazon, £18 for 3 bottles (one for each of us) of 100 sprays.

shalva · 23/04/2020 08:34

Solgar everytime
You can buy online at iherb.com. Great worldwide service!

DeathByBoredom · 23/04/2020 08:38

Example of hux 20 000 for a fiver from the chemist. I really haven't found better value from a more reliable source
Note that's the 20 000 not 2000 but it comes in different strengths. I just take 20 000 a few times a week instead of 5000 daily

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 23/04/2020 08:40

I go outside and expose my flabby white corpus to sunlight for 20 minutes. There are advantages to being a red-headed AngloCelt sometimes.

Dowser · 23/04/2020 10:31

I like biocare.
Solgar I’ve gone off quite a bit. I think they put too many fillers in.
You do need to take it with vitamin k2 to help it absorb

20 minutes, all limbs exposed to the sun is apparently all you need per day. We didn’t get enough sun here so we need to supplement.

Also if you take iodine you need to supplement with ionic selenium

Katinski · 23/04/2020 10:35

When I was having chemo I used to buy mine from Vitamins Direct in Jersey (I think). It was a long time ago...

GrumpyHoonMain · 23/04/2020 10:37

I would look up the brand you want on Amazon and buy it there if the seller / distributer is Amazon. Solgar vitamins are often half the price than in H&B. Alternatively buy directly from the Vitabiotics website.

Lordfrontpaw · 23/04/2020 10:40

Yes definitely check out any brands you find online! The stuff my mum used to find when dad had cancer - my god...

Katinski · 23/04/2020 10:41

Just checked, it was Guernsey. As I wrote, it was a long time ago but it seems that 'chemo brain' remainsGrin

mencken · 23/04/2020 10:53

go outside and expose some limbs, everyone is allowed to do that. UK UV levels should now be enough to make vitamin D as it is nearly the end of April.

or follow dietician advice as that is a real and protected qualification. Nutritionist etc is not - you might just as well believe Gwyneth Paltrow.

Difficultcustomer · 23/04/2020 11:00

I bought some at Costco pre Covid. Used as per instructions on the back. It was only when a relative looked that they saw it was well over NHS recommended daily amount so do be careful on that. (Not saying anything wrong with the capsules themselves and I’m not medical so don’t know if taking more is good/bad/indifferent)

For example following Holland and Barrett says one a day, each is 25ug - 25mcg, they also sell 10ug capsules

AnotherMurkyDay · 23/04/2020 11:03

Mine are either Holland & Barrett, supermarket own brand, of one of ones made by vitabiotics

TheVanguardSix · 23/04/2020 11:04

Solgar.

MsJuniper · 23/04/2020 11:07

I was also going to ask this question!

I bought some from Amazon from TDN Nutrition. I had a look and it's a UK company and seems ok but I don't have much experience of vitamins apart from the supermarket brands. If anyone has heard of them I'd be interested to know.

What vitamin suppliers would you trust
Thighmageddon · 23/04/2020 11:07

I can get my vitamin d on prescription but it's grim tasting stuff so I buy mine direct from Vitabiotics online and have it delivered.

@LWJ70 why are you posting exactly the same thing on EVERY post mentioning vitamins?

Dowser · 23/04/2020 11:15

My doctor used to say you had to be south of the 40 degree parallel to get the most benefit from the suns rays..something about the angle of the sun to the body.
I have heard this before..so unless I’m in Tenerife Or a really hot day in the uk I supplement
