Genuinely asking for a friend on tenerife, does anyone know if airlines are flying to Tenerife sur airport

He’s lost his livelihood. Self employed.
He’s wondering if planes are flying. I think not but then it looks like there’s a. Limited service..maybe home owners, business people

I cannot see anyone wanting to go for a holiday to go on lockdown which is worse than here.

I think jet2 have stopped flying. Just wondered if tui or Ryan air are flying people out
Thank you

Tui stopped too, from what I've been told.
Have a look at Vueling, they might still be flying. They go to Barcelona then another onto UK.

Dowser · 22/04/2020 21:33

My friend said islands want to open, but Madrid says no
Unless you had a home there, there’s not a lot of point going there
When we were there last month the swimming pools were closed, so isolating around the hotel pool was not an option.

unless your friend lives in tenerife, even if they could get a plane they wont be let into the country

Tui aren't flying at all until May 15th. So they say, but I guarantee it will be extended.

Dowser · 22/04/2020 22:04

Yes he lives in Tenerife.
His business was very linked to tourists.

Actually Germany might be coming out of lockdown quicker than us and the islands get a lot of german tourists

We four had his residencia then he can legally enter Tenerife. Is he hasn’t got residency then I’m not sure. Ask him to call the consulate in Santa Cruz.

newyearnoeu · 22/04/2020 22:33

not at the moment. I have a family member there who is desperate to leave, but no flights for the last few weeks. It seems a bit unfair, because as a pp said, cases on the canary islands have reduced hugely since holidaymakers have left (apparently one island haven't had any cases) but they are still subject to the very strict lockdown rules covering central Spain. Tell your friend to avoid skyscanner - apparently they were still advertising flights but when you called the airline or airport they didn't exist.

tanstaafl · 22/04/2020 22:40

There’s a northern airport on Tenerife.
Think that does mainly Spanish and inter-island flights.

Assuming there are any and bearing in mind the other restrictions pp have already mentioned.

There are a couple of indirect repatriation flights a week I think they have to be arranged though the British Embassy in Santa Cruz.
They go through Madrid and get you back to UK. I think they are expensive but there is a scheme where you can borrow money and repay embassy
If your friend needs assistance while he is away then there are schemes like in UK where he can be helped with food parcels etc. He's best to look on tenerife facebook pages for details.

BarbaraofSeville · 23/04/2020 08:38

So is he wanting to come back to the UK or does he just want to know when he will start seeing tourists to use his business again?

Jet2 are not flying until at least June 17. Similar for other UK/Ireland based low cost airlines. I think they did do some repatriation flights a few weeks ago, but they've stopped for now.

Spanish airlines and even other European ones likely to be similar. The website for Tenerife south airport says there are no flights:

www.aena.es/en/tenerife-sur-airport/index.html

If he's stuck in Tenerife with no income he needs to try the British consulate and whatever help has been arranged by the council, Red Cross, or whoever is providing help to people with no food, money etc on the island.

As far as when there will be anywhere near a normal amount of tourists visiting Tenerife, there's been a few reports issued this week that say that there might not allow international tourists until October, because obviously if international travel is allowed again, that's likely to reignite the spread of the virus.

Dowser · 23/04/2020 12:25

Sorry, I didn’t mean to drip feed and it was just a basic enquiry on flights so I didn’t give any more info.
He’s russian , lived there 20 years. Much of his business relies on the tourists coming over and he just wanted to know, if I knew when the planes were starting to fly again.
I think other nationalities will get there first owing to the high number of covid cases we have had.

Even if flights were going from the uk, no one is going to spend a lot of money to sit in lockdown in Tenerife in a hotel room.

I just wondered if any airline staff on here had been given the heads up on when they were going to restart the flight service again

Barbara, we are due to go back in October. Our accommodation is booked but we haven’t got the flight yet.
🤞

I got the impression we were on one of the last flights out of there and the airport was closing an March 21

If you go onto the airport and see the departure flights over the next couple of days you can see airlines running and go to their sites

knittingaddict · 23/04/2020 12:32

International tourists are going to be few and far between even when some lockdowns are lifted slightly. Enough tourists to make a living? Probably next year. Or the year after that.

BarbaraofSeville · 23/04/2020 12:39

No-one knows when the planes are going to start flying again, or when things are going to be back to anything like normal. Even when some international travel is permitted, tourist numbers might still be very low due to people not wanting to travel, entry restrictions, eg tourists from some countries being allowed in, but not others, quarantine on arrival etc.

Unfortunately anyone reliant on tourism, especially in places like Tenerife, where it's a significant part of the economy, is going to be hit hard for a long time Sad.

Probably the only thing your friend can do is seek help through the appropriate channels. If he wants to go back to Russia, ask the consulate or airports if there is any chance this might be possible.

Weepingwillows12 · 23/04/2020 12:55

My understanding is travel to spain is still banned unless you can prove you are a returning resident therefore I dont think any airlines know when they can fly again. Most airlines wont return to full schedule immediately anyway and I would guess only open a few routes initially to see how it goes. Sorry for your friend. It is very hard for anyone in the tourism industry at the moment.
