Mackerel -Would You eat it?

This might be a really stupid question but I just don't know the answer.

I have 2 packs of mackerel frozen but the use by date is September 2019, Ive just read the back of the packet and it says use within one month of freezing.

Will this be safe to eat? I thought once things were frozen they would be fine for a lot longer than a month?

Excuse my stupidity but I just don't know if its safe.

Thank You :)

It should be fine but the flavour may not be quite as good as it was originally.

CtrlU · 22/04/2020 13:42

Is it a deep freezer ?

Personally I would eat it

CtrlU · 22/04/2020 13:42

defrost it first though and see what it’s like and if it smells

dellacucina · 22/04/2020 13:43

And when I say the flavour may not be as good, I mean that it may taste freezer burnt, not rotten. I'd probably use this in a dish with lots of other strong flavours given that potential issue

MowCopCastle · 22/04/2020 13:44

I definitely would, ime it'll be fine.

Ginfordinner · 22/04/2020 13:45

No, because mackeral that isn't spankingly fresh just doesn"t taste nice IMO. I doubt that it will kill you though.

inwood · 22/04/2020 13:45

I wouldnt because the stuff is absolutley vile, from a food safety point of view I would though, I never look at dates on things in the freezer.

KnobwithaK · 22/04/2020 13:45

I wouldn't but then a) I'm pregnant, and b) I was raised veggie so always quite cautious around meat. If you don't have any health conditions then defrosting it and giving it a sniff sounds sensible.

ZeroFuchsGiven · 22/04/2020 13:46

Thank You, it is smoked if that makes a difference. I shall defrost it and see :)

I would. Best before dates don't exist in my freezer.

speakout · 22/04/2020 13:49

It would be safe but will taste rank.
Oily foods including fish oxidise even below zero.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 22/04/2020 13:53

Smoked mackerel is already cooked. I would eat it without a second thought, but I would want to eat it asap after it defrosted. I usually make smoked mackerel pate with it, mixing it with cottage cheese, lemon juice and a dollop of horseradish sauce, chopped parsley too if available. Alternatively my husband likes it grilled till just heated through, with a side salad.

Ginfordinner · 22/04/2020 14:05

They do speakout. I find if I keep sausages in the freezer for too long they don't taste nice.

Best before dates don't exist in my freezer

I convince my DS that if I put food in the freezer that has gone a day over , there's a Time and Space Continium that reverses time Grin

He is Hmm at this .

Riv12345 · 22/04/2020 15:26

I wouldn't

Riv12345 · 22/04/2020 15:29

That's just me, we were having this conversation at work a few weeks ago, I noticed my pasta salad was a day out of date, I wouldn't eat it, so my colleague said let's swap!

So I had her freshly made cous cous and she had my pasta salad
She said nothing bothers her about dates on food, she said her nan was the same, she grew up on a farm.

Ginfordinner · 22/04/2020 15:34

Unfortunately I have had salmonella food poisoning and it has made my digestive system far more sensitive to food that is past its best, so I am careful about eat by dates.

Voxx · 22/04/2020 15:38

Normally, I’d say eat it because the chances are it will be absolutely fine. However, lockdown has made me more cautious. I don’t want to risk food poisoning and a potential A&E visit at the moment so I wouldn’t eat it personally.

Doje · 22/04/2020 15:42

I did, a couple of days ago. I chucked it into a fish pie with a mix of other fish. It had been in the freezer a loooong time.

We're all alive, but it if I'm honest, the texture was a bit umm...chewy. Although, I don't know what it would have been like otherwise IYSWIM. Anyways, if staying alive is your goal, rather than quality of fish, then you'll be fine.

Northernsoullover · 22/04/2020 15:44

No I wouldn't. It would probably be ok but I can never enjoy food when there is an element of doubt.
