EDF ENERGY

Hi all

Hi all

I am currently with EDF energy and have a key/ card meter for my gas and electric.

My electricity is great - I usually top up about £30-£40 p/month and it’s usually enough and more.

Gas however is a killer. I am struggling to find ways to keep the costs down. At the moment I’m currently topping up about £80-£120 a month.

I work everyday and my child (6yrs old) is at school so the house is empty from 8am -7pm Monday - Friday. I then come home and turn on the heating myself. (it’s not on timed so no chance of switching on when the house is empty). The hot water is switched to OFF and I only turn it on half hour or so before I need to use hot water (bath/ washing dishes etc) however I find the gas goes so fast.

Does anyone know of any cheaper tarrifs/ providers I am able to switch to before winter please.

Turning the thermostat down by just a couple of degrees could make a difference, without you feeling colder.

I think it would be good to know how much you are being charged per unit as it sounds very expensive for a smaller house with A rated EPC.

Mischance · 22/04/2020 10:57

I have just joined Look After My Bills - they find the cheapest (but one with good customer service record - so they are not looking at all suppliers) - they search around every year and swap for you.

I was with a green energy company but the unit cost became too high foe me, however much I applaud their aims.

@wowfudge
Thank you, I put it on 22’ for maybe half hour or 45 mins then turn down to 18’. I have to switch the thermostat to over 20’ just to turn the heating on if you know what I mean. When it’s below 18’ the boiler doesn’t turn on so I turn on to heat the place up then turn down once the place has warmed up and only turn up again when I feel it’s getting cold.

I have shown a picture of my traffic details. I’m unsure what it all means honestly but I’ve just been off the phone to EDF and they have said it does seem excessive so I just do meter readings for the next week twice a day na in the mean time I will be checking for a cheaper tarrif or provider.

I switched from EDF to Bulb when on prepay and the saving was v noticeable. Uswitch is good for comparison.

@iwalkinmyclothing

Thank you. I will have a look and compare what’s best x.

fuck me, that's expensive! (excuse the language but that was my reaction!!) Especially in an A rated house, I didn't know there was such a thing.

your gas rate should be just over 2p a unit and your daily standing charge around 20p, so your bill is 30% over what it should be on fixed tariffs. I realise that you are on prepay but even so...

ideas:

  • can you go to standard credit meters? That will allow you to get dual fuel bonuses and lower rates. Obviously they can't be fitted at the moment but you need to make that happen.
  • meantime run a comparison and look at the unit rates, not the estimated costs. Unit rates are all that matters, plus standing charge although clearly you can't change the number of days in the year.

be careful with smaller providers who may have zero customer service, and remember all talk of 'green energy' is total nonsense so don't factor that into your decision. People will push Bulb and Octopus as they give recruitment bonuses.

I have seen a lot of complaints about Bulb, it might be regional, but do research before deciding anything.

Nearlyadoctor · 22/04/2020 15:22

We’re with EDF and pay £82 per month combined gas and electric. I’ve just done a comparison as our fix runs out 30/4 and EDF were still cheapest fixing until Nov 2021, people 3 bed detached house. Your daily charge is extreme high but I’m guessing that’s because it’s a prepay meter. Could you change to a monthly tariff?

CtrlU · 24/04/2020 08:28

@Nearlyadoctor
Thank you x I have been making enquiries to switch

if you have a chance, please let us know how you get on. So many on these threads never reply despite lots of detailed advice so your 'thank you's' are very refreshing!
