Help! I’m wasting my days on my phone and snacking too much!

Anyone else?
Shall we do something about it?

Well done on the achievements.

I’ve hoovered, done my workout and showered. Yesterday, I started reading a book in the garden, so that was nice.
I’ve been snacking too much and need to diet now before my clothes get too tight Sad

DH and I are on our own and retired so try to tackle one joint task per day eg washing cars, cutting hedge, clearing out shed (that was fun!) or seed sowing/gardening. The rest of our time is our own. I'm ploughing through Frankenstein for my book club and DH is playing online poker and learning Japanese. But even factoring in exercise I still suspect my Mumsnet/Facebook time has rocketed.

Haggisfish · 23/04/2020 14:09

Well done on reading-I so need to do more of that.

FireandFury · 23/04/2020 14:13

I know what you mean OP. I’ve taken control and have been running or cycling every day and I’ve been fasting. Managed to lose a fair bit of weight in a week so will stick at this and start low carbing.

I’ve stopped the baking and am back to eating clean. I’ve got a smashing tan though as I’ve been working out in my garden. Dp says I’ve never looked better but I’m not so sure ha.

The thing to remember with phone usage time I always think is that back when you were kids you wouldn't have thought anything of seeing your mum in one day read a newspaper, called a couple of family or friends for a chat, written a letter, read a magazine, looked at clothes catalogues and shopping catalogues, written a shopping list, done some paperwork/bills, looked through recipe books, read through encyclopaedias to look something up and holiday magazines to look at future holiday ideas.

It's just that now that ALL the above can literally be done on your phone so really when you divide it up like that the screen time doesn't always have to feel so bad. Or that's what I like to think anyway Wink

ZetaPuppis · 24/04/2020 09:50

@FireandFury that’s an inspiring post. You’ll be emerging out of this lockdown like a butterfly Smile

@longhaulstress that is very true but it’s all the stuff that’s a waste of time that I end up doing mostly. I guess that’s why I started this thread. I wasn’t being very productive at all.
I’m not used to it and it doesn’t feel good.

Exercise done this morning. I’m getting a bit more into reading but it is a bit of a struggle, I have to admit.

I’ve got a zoom call with friends this afternoon so I’m looking forward to that.

How’s everyone getting on with their time-wastage? Grin

I’m just about keeping things ticking over but I’m only one step away from becoming a total slattern.

So far today I’ve dug out a musical instrument I started to learn back in September but haven’t touched since January and had a little play around on that. I’ve also showered which is a bonus when I’m not working.

Just about to make my second breakfast and then heading out to the garden to pull up some weeds.

ZetaPuppis · 01/05/2020 16:53

I do have lots of time wasting going on but good news!
I’ve kept up my exercise regime and lost 4lbs
I’ve finished a book
I’ve watched a boxset
Er...that’s about it for now.

My plan is to start doing some more work and play a board game with the dcs, as well as keeping up with what I’m doing.

You're not alone, today I found myself watching the most mind numbing rubbish on youtube. I even found myself watching someone go through their Tesco shopping delivery on youtube and half way through I thought wtf am I doing? Am I really sat here watching a women go through what she'd purchased from Tesco?! Yesterday was worse at 3am in the morning I found myself watching someone refurbish a shoe!

DarylDixonsHair · 01/05/2020 17:10

I wrote out a schedule for the day that involves work, school work, family time, housework, exercise etc. I hope if we stick to it then there will be less time to play around on phones. Its just me and small dc, I'm not enforcing it on another adult!

Doingtheboxerbeat · 01/05/2020 18:08

I have bought a book (for the first time in years) and exercise equipment and have glanced at healthy recipes - yet here I am still in my pj's on my phone.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 01/05/2020 18:26

I am worried that I’ll look back on this huge amount of time spent at home and think I wasted it ... sleeping, TV/phone, too much booze in evening ... I agree with Haggisfish that I’m not as productive the next day.

I’m wfh as well but not busy at all.

I’ve cleared out a few cupboards, done a bit of gardening and tried out a few new recipes but that’s not a lot in six weeks Shock

BigSandyBalls2015 · 01/05/2020 18:27

One DD is here in the day (home from uni), we’ve got into a little routine where she emerges at about 12 and we watch crap daytime TV until about 3/4

Clutterfreeintraining · 02/05/2020 09:26

Well done, zeta Smile - do you think your 4lb loss is just through exercise or have been eating better? I really need to establish a manageable plan...maybe 16:8 or something.

I didn’t make it out to the garden yesterday but I did complete and submit my tax return so that’s made me happy-ish (wasn’t quite prepared for the amount I have to pay but have plenty of time to organise that).

Jem - I find myself doing that too Blush

Daryl - good luck with your schedule.

Doing - what book/exercise equipment did you get? I was looking at secondhand rowing machines before lockdown and slightly regretting not being more organised.

Big - I think the same and am trying to remember the things I have done (not many)...still more than I’d have managed if I’d been working full time. Also, it has been great to have the mental break as I was finding it very unsustainable.

Today, I am going to the garden to start weeding and I am not eating until 12pm!!

ZetaPuppis · 02/05/2020 10:17

@Clutterfreeintraining I started 16:8 too and the exercise was a way to kill time before I could eat breakfast at 12.
My lovely niece sent me a notebook for my birthday a year ago so I’ve dug that out and started doing a daily tick list in there. It’s helped me a lot.
Getting up exercising and having a shower first thing just gives me a kick up the arse.
I’m still on my phone wayyyy too much. Yesterday was 8hrs! Blush
But that included some calls to family and friends.

OP posts:
Clutterfreeintraining · 02/05/2020 14:40

That’s brilliant. I shall focus on 16:8 and see how I get on. Managed to not eat until 2 so that’s a good start but I stayed in bed until nearly 12pm Blush - need to do some work on that!

Doingtheboxerbeat · 02/05/2020 16:01

@Clutterfreeintraining, the book is The hypnotist's love story by Liane Moriarty(still in the bag) Blushand one of those mini trampolines with a handle /bar on it. I have used it a few times actually, it's good for jogging /star jumping without buggering up your knees.

Clutterfreeintraining · 02/05/2020 18:14

I’m rubbish at reading Blush. I mean I can read perfectly well but rarely get round to picking up a book and reading it cover to cover. I might enforce an earlier bedtime routine and read in bed for half an hour instead.

Ooh, I’m liking the sound of a mini-trampoline. I got on the scales today and have just crept back up into the next stone bracket Sad

Clutterfreeintraining · 03/05/2020 11:38

I’ve made progress! I’m up, showered, put a load of washing on, been to the garden and started weeding/tidying (wasn’t as bad as I thought), cleared the backlog of washing up (ds made biscuits Friday night and left a lot of dirty dishes) and spent 20 minutes playing the piano - well, it’s a keyboard and last night I decided to learn a new piece of music. I’ve been (badly) hammering out the same piece of music for at least 25 years (intermittently) so it’s about time I learnt something new Grin

I’ve managed to avoid eating anything so far as well so that’s making me happy.

My plan next is to empty the washing machine, put the next load on and then spend half an hour clearing a bit of space in my room to put a sewing table up.

Last night, I made a list of things that I have achieved during lockdown and whilst there’s nothing mind blowing on there, I am feeling a bit better about how I’ve spent my time so far.

I’ve also made a list of things I’d still like to get done before I go back to work full time so we’ll see how that goes Grin

ZetaPuppis · 03/05/2020 14:39

Well done @Clutterfreeintraining Star for you.

I put off eating until now. Dc and I have been on a lovely long walk and I’ve put a laundry load on.
I started a new book yesterday so I’m looking forward to reading a bit more of that today.
I would love to come out of lockdown and be able to say that I’ve lost weight and read some books.
