Just finished the Harry Potter series with my 10 year old son. Looking for recommendations for a series of books to read that are as good and will keep him interested. Thanks

Harry Potter loving DS also loves
Nevermoor, Starfell, a Pinch of Magic, the Secret of Platform 13 and the Wizards of Once.

The Garth nix trilogy

The Abhorsen books? (There are five now.) They're a bit dark for a 10 year old, I think, with its possessed zombies. I thought they were wonderful but my adult colleague said they gave her nightmares.

Susan Cooper's The Dark is Rising series is good, but start with the second one (The Dark is Rising) then go back to read the first (Over Sea, Under Stone) if you like it. It's a classic good vs evil story with a magical world alongside ours, incorporating bits of Arthurian and Celtic mythology.

Would His Dark Materials be too complex? It's an amazing series though. You could watch the BBC adaptation before/after/as you read it though.

I came on to say Percy Jackson, but I can see people have said it already. Anyway, another vote here for this series - a winner in this house.

I was going to recommend these too, a mature 10 year old should be OK but one that's a bit "younger" or less well read might not get on with them. I'm not sure they're much worse than some bits of HP

Wolf Brother by Michelle Paver.

This is a great thread - I've just ordered the Edge books 1-6.

A boy on the bus (when my children were still in school) recommended Lockwood & Co by Jonathan Stroud.

I came on to say Dianne Wynne Jones too. Ds2 read Charmed Life and is working his way through the rest of the series very quickly.
Hunger Games has been read recently by DS1 at age 13 and is the first fiction that has gripped him since HP but I agree with PP that 10 is too young.

What about the demon headmaster books?

Wtfdidwedo · 22/04/2020 17:40

Yay I'm glad people are sharing the Edge Chronicles love. I'm secretly hoping they'll make a TV series of it one day as I think it would be fab!
