French or Spanish

DD is starting secondary in September. She has the option of taking French or Spanish. She’s done French in primary and hates it. Is Spanish any easier?

It's all relative. If she hates French, let her try Spanish. Far more useful anyway.

Swinish is a better language to learn. More fun as well.

Yes, it's easier phonetically. Unlike English and French, a letter in Spanish by and large has one sound and that stays consistent wherever it falls in the word or however it's combined with other letters. Vowel combinations in French can be trickier; Spanish is more straightforward.

If she hasn't enjoyed French so far (I Iove the language by the way) then a fresh start with Spanish might be the way to go.

Either country is great for holidays so hopefully she may get the chance to use her language abroad in the future.

Thanks for the replies. She does want to do Spanish so I’m pleased to hear that it’s a bit easier.

DS’s school do Spanish as their main foreign language, and DS loves it. He did French for a year, was not keen at all (although he was good at it). Give Spanish a go, used more widely across the world.

I loved Spanish at uni and found it fairly straight forward. Go for it.

Spanish is much easier and has many more workers around the world.

Both languages use male and female nouns.
Spanish is very phonetic. Any stressed letters are accented. Spanish has 2 verbs "to be" and the informal "Tu" and the formal "usted" for you.
If I had the choice again I would pick Spanish over French.

Spanish every time.

Spanish has better results nationally and is perceived as easier than French, plus it’s far more popular. Your dd is lucky to have a choice. Many schools are trying to save other languages by not offering a choice. Spanish is indeed phonetic, with several notable exceptions eg ll=y, so me llamo =may yamo and j is usually pronounced as an h.

Get her on an app to give her a little head start. All of my groups are on Memrise so I can track how much time/how many words students have learned. If you can find out which textbook or course she’ll be following, there will be a specific Memrise course for it.

My lot all follow their textbooks so consolidate their vocabulary learning weekly on the app then have regular testing on the school based vocab which matches. Don’t pay for it, it’s free, they just like to try to make you sign up for the creating side which she doesn’t need.

I teach French and Spanish. Obviously I love both. But Spanish is easier.
