Anyone had plantar fasciitis?

BrandyandBabycham · 21/04/2020 09:33

I have bad pain in my heel which I think is likely to be plantar fasciitis. Had it for a few weeks but it seems to be getting worse. It’s tricky with the surgery at the moment, although I guess I could use “ e consult” or just chat to my GP over the phone. Does anyone have any advice for easing it? I think it’s supposed to go away on it’s own

I have had this since last summer and it is getting worse. However I have noticed that when I stand up I notice 2 pea size lumps appear on the inside of my foot. Has anybody else had this aswell?

Another vote for FitFlops & never going barefoot

Governoress86, yes I had one wee lump on the inside of my foot. It was one of the last symptoms to go.

Governoress86 · 02/05/2020 17:09

EsmeShelby, do you know if the lumps were a symptom of the plantar fascitis?. The lumps don't hurt and only appear when I stand.

Do you by chance have a longer second toe than your big toe? If so look up Morton's toe. No I am not crazy. Explains a lot including PF!

Governoress86 · 02/05/2020 21:11

I do have a longer second toe on both feet. I have never heard of Morton's toe but it does sound like I have that too!

I had plantar fasciitis last year, and also had a lump in the base of the foot. I'm not in the UK, and ended up seeing sports medicine physiotherapists at the university where my DH teaches. Everything they did to fix it, they explained what and why.
The lump is actually muscle tissue. Instead of being aligned in one direction, as muscle tissue should be, it's going as a knot ofmuscle fibres going in a heap of different directions at the one location. To fix it, you need to actually break up the knot of fibres by pressing directly onto the lump as hard as you can. Try to do it for at least ten minutes per day. It will hurt, but it makes a huge difference.
I second the recommendation for the Katy Bowman book.

Acupuncture worked for me and my Mum.

Lots of great advice here. I’m just about to to graduate from a RMT program and plantar fasciitis is very fresh in my brain. Yes to proper arch support, stretching the sole of your foot, massaging it as well. Rolling your foot on a frozen water bottle is helpful. While it is due to inflammation in the fascia in the sole of your foot, especially where it attaches to your heel bone, often the calf muscles are involved as well so stretching the calves and massaging them can be helpful.

Unfortunately it does usually take months to resolve. Steroid injections are only a temporary solution, and can actually prove harmful over time as they actually break down bone and joint tissue with excess use.

MiniMum97 · 03/05/2020 01:56

Arch supports in all your shoes. Don't walk barefoot. Oofos are amazing. Relief immediately and cleared up completely within a few weeks. You have to keep with the arch supports etc though or it come back sadly.

Anyone had plantar fasciitis?
maddiemookins16mum · 03/05/2020 06:41

I have it, it’s horrid. I’m pretty sure being 3 stone overweight does not help.

JulesJules · 03/05/2020 06:53

Yes I've had this, and bursitis. The key is wearing shoes which support the arches - Birkenstocks are the best for this I found and as others have said, wear them in the house too. Do stretching exercises - before you get out of bed you can use a dressing gown tie to stretch and push your foot against it. Keep your feet up when you are sitting down. Use a chilled can of coke to roll your feet over which is very soothing. Take ibuprofen. As they improve, you can massage them by rolling over first a tennis ball, then a golf ball. They will get better but it takes a long time.

Incrediblytired · 03/05/2020 06:57

My husband has it diagnosed. He has the flattest feet I’ve ever seen and was seen by the NHS specialist.

They gave the stretches but the thing that seems to have really made a difference is wearing arched insoles - his were prescribed but you can probably buy them. Also wearing supportive lace-up shoes or trainers.

Quibblewibble · 03/05/2020 07:06

I think being in lockdown and wearing slippers is making mine worse.

Whatsgoingonrightnow · 03/05/2020 07:50

Yep I had it during my last pregnancy and for a few months after he was born. I had to wear Birkenstock’s around the house because being barefoot was too painful and I wore running trainers all of the time outside. It took about 6 months to go but hasn’t returned.

francienolan · 03/05/2020 20:18

Wear good arch support, if you don't have shoes with this you can add insoles. The stretches help too. I had it really bad several years ago and the doctor recommended that, I was going away for a few weeks and if it wasn't sorted by the time I got back I would have needed a shot in my foot for it, but that did fix it and I didn't need the shot. But it does exist if it gets that bad for you!

Nutellaoneverything · 05/05/2020 07:28

I've had plantar fasciitis for a few years now, and although my left foot is very much improved my right foot feels as bad as ever. I wear only supportive shoes with custom built innersoles (many times adjusted) tried foot massage, exercises, having them taped, using those overnight strap socks with no relief. Can someone please post a link to a YouTube video of an exercise that really worked?
