Hi.
DD (11) has been using Neal’s yard deo but is complaining of feeling wet underarms all the time. Also growing some underarm hair. I’m a Bit reluctant to use anti perspiring just yet. What do others do?

Whats wrong with anti perspirant?
She's feeling wet and its bothering her, there's a very simple solution.

wowfudge · 21/04/2020 07:56

Just give her some antiperspirant.

Moominmummy12 · 21/04/2020 08:17

I wasn’t sure if AP were harmful to young skin.

I remember the sweat running down my underarms during puberty because my dm didn’t sweat & claimed to have no idea what to do about it.

Just buy her some ap.

Northernsoullover · 21/04/2020 09:17

Just buy her some bloody soft and gentle. Maybe a nice razor if she wants to remove the hair.

Inforthelonghaul · 21/04/2020 10:00

Get her an electric shaver or epilator if she doesn’t like the hair and an anti perspirant to use. She’s hitting puberty and you don’t want her to be the stinky kid that people avoid. I started mine on roll ins but they hated the damp feeling so switched to sprays early on.

Get her an electric shaver or epilator

Don’t just get her an epilator and leave her to it. It’s tricky epilating your own underarms!

mencken · 21/04/2020 11:29

epilators really hurt! A bic razor doesn't (buy the ones aimed at men, don't pay the pink tax). If she wants to shave, of course.

if she's old enough to sweat in an adult fashion, she's old enough for anti perspirant. Same as if she's old enough to menstruate, she's old enough to use tampons if she wants.

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 21/04/2020 11:48

What Mencken said. Gillette Fusion will last forever, one blade pack does me over 6 months. DW uses mine because they're better than any of the pink crap.

okiedokieme · 21/04/2020 11:53

Battery operated shaver and a roll on anti perspirant - Aldi own brand is fine

Terralee · 21/04/2020 11:56

Get her a can of Nivea Black & White invisible original quick dry anti perspirant spray. It's really good.

I started shaving my pits & using anti perspirant deodorant at 9.

naysayer · 21/04/2020 12:25

I felt the same way when DD started to sweat. Wasn't keen on full strength anti-perspirants which use aluminium - was this your worry? We held off for a long time as she found everything we tried stung her - has sensitive skin. Then tried Holland and Barrett organic roll on - which stays wet and doesn't really work. Soft and Gentle aluminium free is ok but doesn't last long, as I have found for myself. It doesn''t sting though. There are an increasing number of alu free brands now to try. But I also use Sanex dry stick aluminium free and it works well. I prefer dry sticks. Going to get DD a stick of that.

lachy · 21/04/2020 13:19

As with many things, its a process of trial and error. If your DD doesn't like the feeling of roll on deodorant then there are dry stick antiperspirants she can try,

If she is bothered by underarm hair, then help her to remove it and let her try different options, shaving, veet, waxing etc.

Its awful feeling self conscious - I remember my mum telling me that I was far too young to shave my legs, but at the time I was being teased relentlessly by a group of school "friends".

Rafflesway · 21/04/2020 13:48

I wouldn’t give her a Bic razor! I still have a nasty scar under one arm where I had several stitches from using a Bic razor as an adult and the blasted thing snapped in half whilst I was using it and sliced my underarm. ☹️

My dd has severe learning difficulties and I have always bought her the
Wilkinson Sword Intuition razor. The blades have inbuilt lotion and it is virtually impossible to cut yourself. They are excellent!

Ideal for an 11 yr old IMO.

Moominmummy12 · 21/04/2020 16:26

Cheers everyone.

Get her anti-perspiration she’s developing into a young adult. Ooft it was one of the most self conscious times ever and my mum didn’t help. She is very fair with beefy fine and light body hair. I have very dark body hair (my mum has never shaved her legs as she doesn’t have to or shaped her eyebrows) and she refused to help me deal with it. I didn’t many summers cutting myself trying to get rid of body hair.
