Out of Date Hayfever Meds - Cetirizine Hydrochloride

DS (11) suffers from Hayfever (as does DH) which manifests itself in nosebleeds over night as well as the more traditional itchy eyes etc.

We have a bottle of the Cetirizine Hydrochloride that the GP prescribed, but its best before day is Feb 2019 (for some reason DS was not badly affected last year).

Can I give this to him? Will it be OK? Will it be effective?

I don't particularly want to go out for Piriton or bother the GP/Pharmacy if I don't have to.

Thanks

No do not give anyone this!!
I'm an ex nurse & out of date meds are dangerous!
Get some from a chemist / supermarket anywhere. A chemist would prefer you to bother them than you to end up in ED at this time.

Brilliant, thank you @Terralee

Just call the gp for another one. They can easily get a prescription put up over the phone.

you can call the manufacturer, contact details in the package leaflet or call a pharmacy.
iirc cetirizine in tablet form is ok fora while, but liquid formulations have a shorter shelf life.

woodencoffeetable · 20/04/2020 11:28

tbh at 11 I would buy the tablets (cheap as generics).
the tablets are tiny.
practice swallowing with smarties or tic tacs.

I’m not going to try tablets - far too soon after the mist recent “tablet-gate”. Now is not the time for making things first difficult than they need to be.

no of course not in that case.
maybe a long term project. tablets are a lot cheaper and easier to store.

I got a new bottle OTC, £4. Very straightforward.
