Tree issues with neighbours

Hi I was just looking for others points of view. In my garden is a really horrible tree. It takes up quite alot of my garden and over hangs alot and makes it depressing and very shaded. I was not actually taking the tree down but cutting quite a few branches. People who live over the back of me have told me to stop because I'm ruining their privacy. I thought they meant to their garden and I said I would add a taller fence. But they had meant privacy for their upstairs bedrooms. Theres no curtains or blinds up at their windows I have said I won't cut any more of the tree. Which I won't. But on also thinking. Should they not but blinds or somthing?

It’s your tree, you can do what you like with it.

Wetcarparkrain · 19/04/2020 19:52

But who does the tree belong to?

KatharinaRosalie · 19/04/2020 19:54

Your neighbours told you not to cut your tree because they don't want to buy curtains? Bonkers.

Mumdiva99 · 19/04/2020 19:54

If the tree is yours and you want to cut it there isn't much they can do. But for the sake of neighbourly relations you can explain it cuts the light off to your garden and you will be doing it (next week/next month) to give them time to source curtains etc.

donquixotedelamancha · 19/04/2020 19:56

In my garden is a really horrible tree....People who live over the back of me have told me to stop

Did they really tell you not to cut your own tree?

sunshinesupermum · 19/04/2020 19:57

It's your tree casting shadow in your garden! The CFs can get blinds

walksen · 19/04/2020 19:57

Unless it has a tpo or you live in a conservation area you can cut the tree down if it is your garden especiaaly if it will make it more useable. You also have to consider the longer you leave it the harder it will be to sort out in the future. I think its a bit cf of them to say it spoils their bedroom privacy; they should get blinds!

Overthemoon2020 · 19/04/2020 19:58

Yes they did but I was not 100% sure on their abd my rights. And it was not till bit later that I thought more about it. I just did not want to cause bad feeling so said i would stop

filka · 19/04/2020 20:18

If it's your tree, the only thing that can stop you cutting it down is a Tree Preservation Order. Neighbours need to buy curtains or blinds.

BurnIt · 19/04/2020 21:14

Fuck that shit. Do what you like to your own pillow tree in your own garden!

There's a really horrid tree in the garden at the back of us. Wish theyd cut that bugger down .

Freddiefox · 19/04/2020 21:16

But they’re not worried, it’s your tree to cut down. They can easily get blinds or not that’s up to them

SureTry · 19/04/2020 21:34

WTF it's your tree! Do whatever you want to it and tell them to grow their own fucking tree! Entitled twits!

midwesteaster · 19/04/2020 21:36

They are being daft. It is your tree, sort out your garden in a way that works for you.
Curtains and blinds were invented a while ago to solve just such issues.

Overthemoon2020 · 19/04/2020 21:54

Just wanted to show the tree this is after I have cut some. The people complaining have a lovely garden and mine is totally awful as you can see.

It's your tree but take advice on nesting birds before you do anything.

Disfordarkchocolate · 19/04/2020 21:56

Also, it's not ugly at all.

Overthemoon2020 · 19/04/2020 22:01

I guess the actual tree is not ugly. But it's to over grown and causes shadows. Which I had just makes the garden very depressing

OP posts:
midwesteaster · 19/04/2020 22:02

@Disfordarkchocolate is right about nesting birds and it not being ugly.
But it does look oversized for the amount of garden you have.
Do you have a plan regarding what you want the tree to look like once you have finished your tree surgery?
You will lose privacy if you take away a lot of tree, so you need to balance that with light access.
Either way it is your choice to make. I would consider removing that tree completely and replacing it with a size appropriate one.

Chloemol · 19/04/2020 22:03

It’s your tree. If you don’t want it take it down. If they want privacy they can get curtains

Overthemoon2020 · 19/04/2020 22:16

There are definitely not a nest in the tree. I never had a plan to be honest I just wanted to stop it shadowing my garden. I was doing it myself but I don't really know what I'm doing. So I think after all the lock down is done i will get someone in to do it and get proper advice. I'm not sure if I'm in a conversation area or not. So I think if i get someone in to do it they can keep within the rules of what's allowed to be done ?

OP, your tree, they are clearly on drugs.

It is indeed far too big for the space.

The shadow from your house suggests that your aspect might not be great.

Triming that tree back massively should hugely improve your light in your garden.

They are massive CF.
Do not engage with them.

campion · 19/04/2020 22:36

You need a proper tree surgeon to sort that tree. If you hack limbs off without knowing what you're really doing it'll look terrible! A tree surgeon will shape it and it'll look tons better. Trees can really frame a garden so I wouldn't want rid of it yet. Obviously you may have to wait but there are still people doing outdoor work.

However, your neighbours! Maybe they like trees and are spinning you a line in the hope you'll keep it. Or maybe they're a bit odd. .. and cheeky.

Mistymonday · 19/04/2020 22:45

Please don’t cut it down, trees are important for our wildlife, ecosystem, air pollution etc. It takes years for them to grow. By all means trim it, thin it to let light in etc. Trees add value, there is a reason wealthier areas are leafy and less desirable areas are less green.

Mumdiva99 · 22/04/2020 10:28

Having seen a picture I would get a tree surgeon to take it down approx 50% and reduce the width. I think it would make a massive difference to you whilst keeping relations cordial with the neighbours.

Potionqueen · 22/04/2020 10:39

Get a tree surgeon in. Ignore your neighbours. They want privacy, they buy blinds or put a tree in their garden.
