I live near.to a.shipbuilding town and every year on New year's Eve they blow the hooters at.midnight. And more recently it's.been done for other special occasions so on a Thursday along with the clapping for key workers were also have the eerie sound of the ships hooters (( I love it, it instantly.transports me.to being a.small child, throwing the doors and windows open and listening out for the.hooters ))

Does anywhere else do this or is it just our area ?? I've googled but can't find anything.........reason I'm asking is the hooters have just been going and I instantly went onto our local news page to see what event id missed. 😂😂😂

No idea OP but I would have described them as ships horns. I have made a mental note to describe them as hooters from now on though Grin

TwelveLeggedWalk · 19/04/2020 16:54

Yes, lots of ships horns going here on Thursdays.

And in normal times for big cruise ship launches and things like that.

The horns do an actual job though (they communicate which way the ship is planning on turning etc) so they will be using them for other reasons now as well as lockdown hoots!

MoreRainbowsPlease · 19/04/2020 16:59

I live on the River Itchen near the cruise port and every Thursday the boats have sounded their horns whilst its the clap for carers. Also the cruise ships have been honking each other when they pass each other whilst changing docks and things.

BMW6 · 19/04/2020 18:21

I am in Southampton and the ships are sounding hooters every Thursday at 8pm, and they always do at midnight NYE.
Love it!

Rosegoldglass · 19/04/2020 18:33

On the Tyne and heard them on Thursday too.

LochJessMonster · 19/04/2020 18:50

They are doing it on the Thames, I can hear them in Gravesend.
I love the sound

RandomMess · 19/04/2020 18:56

Heysham joining in!

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 19/04/2020 19:03

I believe they have been hooting here too...Montrose, but I haven't been out to listen. #curmudgeon

They do for Hogmanay though and you hear that even from inside the house. I do go out for that, weather permitting.

frugalkitty · 19/04/2020 20:29

The cruise ships in Southampton joining in the Thursday night clapping is just wonderful to hear, it makes it really special.

whodunit3 · 19/04/2020 20:40

My husband is on the navy so we have always lived near dockyards/military bases. Faslane and now Devonport...

We also heard the horns on Thursday night as we clapped!! Smile It was a lovely sound.

NeverTwerkNaked · 19/04/2020 20:40

Yes live by the Solent /Southampton Water and can hear them joining in on Thursday nights

NeverTwerkNaked · 19/04/2020 20:41

(meant to add - it's fabulous to hear them!)

WhatWouldYouDoWhatWouldJesusDo · 19/04/2020 20:53

It is fabulous to hear....... we're lucky really.

And I honestly cannot imagine celebrating NYE without the hooters blaring, it's like the soundtrack to my life. So many memories come flooding back in that moment........usually involving people who aren't here anymkre, sadly.

The Woolwich ferry did doughnuts this week.

A cruise fan here ( much hated on mn)
We were once moored up next to a Disney ship, we sounded our horn, and the Disney ships horn was ' when you wish upon a star'

I used to live near the sea and could tell it was foggy before I got out of bed due to all the honking out at sea!

Hotwaterbottlelove · 19/04/2020 21:49

I have another question about the hooters. They can be heard from so far away, so doesn't that mean they would be insanely loud for those on the ship?!?

Grabbber · 19/04/2020 21:49

I grew up by the sea - all the hooters were hooted on nye:)

Floobydoodoo · 19/04/2020 22:02

Another from Southampton here and yes, they do it for lots of things. Plus the fireworks on nye, when a big cruise ship leaves port etc.

We don’t live that near the port but have a three-storey house and get amazing views of the whole city...NYE at midnight is incredible, 360 degree fireworks!

MrsBungle · 19/04/2020 22:09

Hooting here too from barges and cruisers on the river where I live

LochJessMonster · 20/04/2020 19:02

I grew up hearing the fog horns from the boats on the River, usually in the early morning. It’s a fond memory of home.
