Anyone speak toddler?

My 19 month old has taken to saying ‘purple’ all the time and I have literally no idea what it means. He definitely isn’t referring to the colour purple (he knows the names of colours but not with any reliability that he’ll match them to the correct colour). He seems to say it whenever he likes something! He says ‘give it’, ‘reach it’, ‘pass it’, ‘please’ or ‘(DS) help’ (as in ‘mummy let me help you eat that cake’) etc. So I don’t think he’s asking for anything. What is he trying to say? I can’t think of anything that ‘purple’ even sounds like!

Alas, while I spoke MyToddler fluently (eventually), each is an entire new lexicon. You’re the only person who speaks YourToddler apart from said toddler. Grin

As my eight year old said yesterday ‘Mummy, I feel SO SORRY for you when I was little...’

Bienentrinkwasser · 19/04/2020 08:05

When asked what he meant by ‘purple’ the other day, he just replied ‘GREEN!’ 😂

It might be an early attempt at toddler humour - ie he really does mean to say purple, and thinks that's just hilarious Grin

My toddler is obsessed with blue. Some days we attempt other colours but blue is 100% the fav.
She's a funny onion so I just leave her to it.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 19/04/2020 08:08

Does his name sound anything like purple?

moobar · 19/04/2020 08:09

Gosh it's hard isn't it. What do you say if you like something or something is nice? Like I say to Dd woody woo if something is cool and fancy. Just think if you say cool or something it might be that?

Could be worse, Dd is saying ARSE and ARSEY constantly. I'm glad we are not leaving farm. She is actually shouting on my dog parsnip. She thinks every dog is called this, so sees a dog, or my father in law with a dog, and shouts ARSE. Grin

When my DC first started talking, purple was "apple". Could it be that?! Pass it, give it, green (they can be), help (me eat it)?! Took until she pointed to an apple in a tree for me to work it out!

stealthbanana · 19/04/2020 08:17

He hasn’t had any exposure to Peppa has he? My DH showed our DS a single YouTube Peppa episode when he was about 18months old and we had months of “purple berry” which then became Peppa Pig...

iMatter · 19/04/2020 08:19

Is he saying "perfect"?

Bienentrinkwasser · 19/04/2020 08:20

He says Apple so I know it’s not that. In fact his speech is really, really good so it’s just bizarre! He says ‘NICE!’ if he has food he likes.

So far he he has said ‘purple’ in relation to:
Dandelions
Pens
The bath
Easter Eggs
... and some other stuff I can’t remember 😂

Could be perfect...

He’s got a couple of Peppa Pig books (I was trying to avoid her at all costs but they snuck in with some hand me down bits!) but he definitely says ‘Peppa Pig’.

My DS at toddler age had a made up (by him) name for his comfort object. We asked him when he was a teenager how the name came about and the so and so couldn’t remember!

TheTiaraManager · 19/04/2020 08:43

Hmmmm I'm not sure. DS kept saying "bum sore" for days at random times. Naturally we were worried as his bottom looked normal etc. After a few days we realised he was saying "dinosaur"! Though often without any dinosaurs being nearby 😂. We worked it out while reading a book about dinosaurs with him.

LillyBugg · 19/04/2020 08:48

Erm...going out on a limb here, is he calling YOU purple??

BalloonSlayer · 19/04/2020 08:49

Could it be "pretty."

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 19/04/2020 08:51

Maybe he just likes the the sound of it. A nephew of mine used to say something like nugumbleeyah! a lot - he didn’t want anything, it didn’t mean anything, evidently he just liked rolling it around in his mouth and expelling it!

Michaelbaubles · 19/04/2020 08:53

Looking at the list, is it “bubble” meaning something round? Dandelions, bath, Easter eggs...

My DD used to drive me mad asking for a “nouse”. Took us ages to work out she was asking for “something else”!

Haz1516 · 19/04/2020 08:55

My 22 month old sometimes wanders round saying "tuna" to himself, he just likes the sound I think...

nevergoingoutagain · 19/04/2020 08:56

My brother used to say lor lor 🤷🏻‍♀️

BikeRunSki · 19/04/2020 09:03

Is it “Thank You”? Scans in a very similar way.

TKAAHUARTG · 19/04/2020 09:07

My toddler responded to every question with “animal” for a while. Tedious little fuckers aren’t they 😂

TheresALight · 19/04/2020 09:10

Beautiful?

Jjjjjj1981 · 19/04/2020 09:34

Could he be referring to an object he wants that is (or is possibly not) purple?

Bienentrinkwasser · 19/04/2020 09:35

Not thank you, he says ‘Ishoo’ for that! Definitely not pretty or bubble. Possibly beautiful?

He’s pointing at the dresser drawer demanding ‘purple’ currently. Pretty sure he means ‘give me the sharpies I know I’m not allowed to have’ 🙄

He probably just likes the word purple. Dd liked the word rolling when she was little. Said it all the time when she was pottering.
