I'm being blackmailed

NCed for this.
I've just received one of those horrible emails asking for money saying if I don't pay up a video of me watching porn will be released to 12 of my contacts. They knew my password which is in the email.

Obviously I'm not going to pay up. I have very rarely watched porn but I have done, the last time being a couple of months ago.
Am I right to think that really they don't have a video of me or could they?

I also had one of these. I didn't recognize the password they used I the email. Do I still need to change all my current passwords?

Imboredinthehouse · 18/04/2020 21:37

There is a website you can find out if you’ve been hacked

haveibeenpwned.com

If you type in google ‘website to find out if I’ve been hacked’ it comes up with the above site as a suggestion, so you know I’m not trying to scam you to Grin
Must have been a heart stopping moment but there have been a few posts about this lately so they are targeting a lot of people. If they actually had a pic of you from your webcam they would have sent a still along with the threat.
Block, delete & change your passwords.

Shitsgettingcrazy · 18/04/2020 21:42

It's a scam. I got the same email.

The passwords they quoted was one I had years ago.

And I dont watch porn.

I deleted it. That was 6 months ago. Not had any issues from ignoring it.

ilovesooty · 18/04/2020 21:45

I got several at work last year. Our IT department was quite amused.

Zaphodsotherhead · 18/04/2020 21:46

I had one of these too! I don't watch porn, my laptop doesn't have a camera and, as someone stated above if they having hacked your camera, how can they simultaneously have a video from the POV of the camera (ie, you) and also the screen (for the porn). The camera would have to be elsewhere in the room to video both at the same time.

It's a scam, They wanted me to pay them in Bitcoins. I don't even know what Bitcoins are. So I didn't. And the internet is not rife with videos of me doing anything (although there is quite an amusing one of me giving a speech somewhere).

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 18/04/2020 21:50

Total scam. They didn't use your camera. Too much work. They just tell you they did and hope you're dumb enough to pay up.

Incrediblytired · 18/04/2020 21:57

It’s very very very likely to be a scam.

But.

This does happen.

sugarlost · 18/04/2020 21:58

I put tape over my camera but yes scam.
So many going on now and lots to do with Corona as well.

Incrediblytired · 18/04/2020 22:00

Poops. Pushed “post” too quickly.

I was going to say - if you have a job in which your good character could be called into question if this was released, then you should ignore it and if they give more specific info, then you need to speak with your employer. This happened to someone at my work as was genuine blackmail.

SnoozyLou · 18/04/2020 22:13

My laptop has a little slider you can flip across the camera lens. Might be worth checking before you pay up.

(Don’t pay up btw. It’s a scam.)

Sabine123 · 18/04/2020 22:22

It is absolutely a scam. I have the same email a few weeks ago and just deleted it. Nothing bad happened !!

shutup* I just assumed they were intended for people who were naive, who watched illegal or extreme sexual abuse, who were worried about normal porn, etc etc.

Witchend · 18/04/2020 22:44

We got one at work claiming that someone had been watching it late at night.
Firstly we don't have any cameras on the machines, secondly the only person there in the night is the live-in caretaker who wouldn't be on the work computers.
I did enjoy teasing him about his "night time activities" though.

FlaskMaster · 18/04/2020 22:46

Scam. I've had a similar email and I don't watch any porn, but still felt horrible and shocked reading it, so I can imagine how awful it must feel if you read it thinking it might be true. Don't worry. They get passwords (hopefully an old one, but change all your passwords everywhere just in case) but that's absolutely not proof of hacking your camera, they're full of shit op, don't give it another second's thought.
