How do you clean the mattress? Obv you can't just put it in the washing machine so has anyone cleaned there's?

Changingmyname1234 · 18/04/2020 09:17

You can't. You can only take the cover off it and handwash that. I ended up buying a new one from the chicco website for £40.

Selfsettling3 · 18/04/2020 09:17

You can get waterproof sheets for them to protect the mattress.

shwirurbsha · 18/04/2020 09:18

I had a waterproof sheet on mine, never needed to clean it. You can buy replacement mattresses though.

It was only cause am now due to have my second I do have a memory foam mattress topper to go on it as my other little one didn't like how hard the mattress actually is! As long as that's clean do you think it will be fine? X

OP posts:
Changingmyname1234 · 18/04/2020 09:52

Sounds fine. I never used a water proof sheet as understood they weren't safe for babies. That's why my mattress was wrecked I guess!

mamaof2girls · 18/04/2020 10:03

I didn't use one eaither just the topper as my little one wouldn't settle in it at first and always wanted a few blankets under her to make it softer so thought it was safer the topper than about 3 blankets etc! With only 5 weeks to go am not sure the mattress would be here in time. When cleaning the fabric is it better to dry it before putting it back together or putting it on wet and letting it dry that way? X

LittleBoyJuly2020 · 18/04/2020 10:05

Sorry to jump in, could you tell me where I can get a mattress topper for the next2me? x

mamaof2girls · 18/04/2020 10:09

Amazon or eBay do them! X

OP posts:
Changingmyname1234 · 18/04/2020 10:23

Would definitely dry thoroughly before putting back together. My mattress start ed smelling bad - like mouldy so think it had got damp from spot cleaning, drool, etc. which is why I needed a new one...

worriedmama1980 · 18/04/2020 10:26

The advise is to get a new mattress for each new baby- it's the lullaby trust guidance.

We bought one online (our first baby, but the next to me had been used by our godchild and was impeccable)

There's some link between reusing mattresses and cot death so it's worth buying a new one I think:

Whatthefunk · 18/04/2020 10:39

I clicked on this, thinking that the OP was lying in hospital, with the X factor reject, in the next bed......Epic fail...Grin

TheTiaraManager · 18/04/2020 10:44

I would get a new mattress in line with the safe sleeping guidelines. My DD loves her Next to Me and seemed to find the mattress comfortable. I bought a mattress protector for it from Amazon

mamaof2girls · 18/04/2020 10:55

I got told because it's not second hand it was fine! As had asked this question at the start off my pregnancy so I knew exactly what I needed for my second as obv we kept all the big stuff from my first who is only 16 months! X

OP posts:
HappyAsASandboy · 18/04/2020 11:42

I agree with the previous post - new baby new mattress.

Although it isn't second hand to you, it is second hand to your baby. Makes no difference whether the mattress was used by a sibling/relative or a stranger. I would (and have) bought new cot/crib/pram mattresses for each baby. Old ones have been recycled into reading corner cushions by covering with material.

Windy1234 · 18/04/2020 11:44

I bought a replacement mattress from website a couple weeks ago, and it arrived within a week x

mamaof2girls · 18/04/2020 11:57

I didn't even think you could get a new mattress for the next to me. As tried googling at the beginning and couldn't find any! There was me thinking I was ready to go in the next few weeks to have this baby!

OP posts:
JanewaysBun · 18/04/2020 12:04

I got a mattress protector that is safe, not plastic etc. I think it's the little green sheep brand

mamaof2girls · 20/04/2020 07:35

Please correct me if am wrong as I have never used one before but some how last night it came into my head. The sleepy heads people sell them second hand but ain't they just sort off the same as a second hand mattress? Don't know how they have been stored no waterproof protector. Can trap mould etc in them or are they completely different?

OP posts:
TheTiaraManager · 20/04/2020 07:39

I know many people who swear by Sleepyheads but the Lullaby trust don't approve them or similar sleeping nests. I didn't have one fir any of my DC

mamaof2girls · 20/04/2020 07:46

Yeah I know I wouldn't use one but obv this chat with saying shouldn't reuse a mattress I thought ain't they sort off the same and everyone buys them
Second hand due to how dear they are! X

OP posts:
toomuchpeppapig · 20/04/2020 08:05

Buy a new mattress from the Chicco website. Around £40 and delivered within a couple of weeks. I've just got one.

Also, I'm not convinced that memory foam is safe for babies? And the sleepyheads are also a sids risk over night, only suitable for supervised naps during the day.

BasinHaircut · 20/04/2020 08:08

Yep I also thought you were going to be on a train or something with Chico on the seat next to you Grin

IAcceptCookies · 20/04/2020 09:25

I also thought this was about being next to old XFactor contestant standing in supermarket queue or something!

HappyAsASandboy · 20/04/2020 14:25

I wouldn't use a sleepyhead because they're advised as unsafe. Even if they were safe, I wouldn't use a second hand one as I think it's the same as a mattress.

People will always sell things second hand that might be less safe than buying new. In the world of baby things, this means I won't buy/use a second hand mattress or car seat. Pretty much anything else is fine second hand (though I would prefer to buy new bottles if I used them). I am currently using second hand pushchair, bedside crib, cloth nappies, clothes, blankets, bassinet etc etc, I just bought new mattresses for things that need a mattress. I am also happy to reuse a car seat I know the history of, as the safety warnings about secondhand car seats are because of car accident history not newness per se.
