Keep me out of prison- How do you manage your PMT?

The things I’d usually find slightly irritating just infuriate me, it’s not over nothing but still relatively small things- my husband taking an hour to get ready even though we’re staying in, opening new packets when there’s one open, dripping drinks over a clean floor etc. I’ve told my husband why I feel irritable and I try to take a deep breath before responding but he’ll still fight his corner and then I lose it. How do you manage it?

With contraception. The only things that’s ever helped

Newgirls · 17/04/2020 16:25

HRT

TwoZeroTwoZero · 17/04/2020 16:45

Citalopram and starflower oil

Pigeonpresent · 17/04/2020 17:01

Which contraception helps @Changedname78? Is Citalopram an antidepressant? Isn’t that a bit strong? starflower oil noted, I’m still a bit young for HRT

I tried the pill which massively helped but made me very low, now the coil it’s fantastic. Just makes me feel .. level! I’d tried everything else

Wine. And a bedroom door that if it is shut, nobody dares open it. . . because beware the beast that rages behind it. . .

MsFrosty · 17/04/2020 17:10

Sertraline. I stupidly came off it last month and the PMT symptoms were shocking. Back on it

andhessixfeetten · 17/04/2020 17:11

I need help too as I'm struggling not to get ratty with neighbours, people who leave dog poo bags on paths, etc, etc.

I'm in the right but these things require careful handling if they aren't to blow up in your face....

IDefinitelyHaveFriends · 17/04/2020 17:12

B6 in large doses

Coconut80 · 17/04/2020 17:16

Agnus castus x

TwoZeroTwoZero · 17/04/2020 17:19

I'm on citalopram anyway for depression but one of the accidental side effects for me was that it eased the pmt symptoms as well.

I tried evening primrose oil but it did fuck all. Starflower oil apparently contains the same thing but in bigger amounts. I started taking it before I went on the anti-d's and it did make a difference. I no longer felt like strangling dh for even daring to breathe near me!

Changedname78 · 17/04/2020 17:26

@Pigeonpresent if your anything like me, I used to feel uncontrollably tired and like a big ball of hormones ready to explode at any moment, I don’t get that at all now

beachbreeze · 17/04/2020 17:30

I don't manage it well. I do yoga which helps, but the problem is being around other people. I'm fine on my own with it!

Pigeonpresent · 17/04/2020 17:38

@andhessixfeetten that’s me! It’s not just temper out of nowhere I just have zero patience for fuckwits! @beachbreeze I tried yoga today, felt sooo relaxed until he came in at the last two minutes to ask me where the foot pump is, when I told him he said ‘if you know where it is can you get it for me’ Angry

Cerazette- the mini Pill. Basically I've stopped my periods & it's great!!

Mummybearsporridge · 17/04/2020 18:38

I had a total hysterectomy at 35!

marriednotdead · 17/04/2020 18:49

I always found a multivitamin WITH MINERALS made a massive difference. A colleague used to have tearful meltdowns every month, I persuaded her to give it a go and it was honestly like a miracle cure.

Post menopause now and still taking mine alongside the HRT.

Geppili · 17/04/2020 18:51

Could it be PMDD?

preponderings · 17/04/2020 20:12

Cerazette.

Pigeonpresent · 17/04/2020 21:02

This is all so helpful!

I hear you loud and clear OP and I don't know what to do about it either.

I'm 43 and it's got/is getting worse.

I think it has a genetic component, right? My mum had HORRIFIC pms (I now realise; back then of course it was never alluded to but she was just an utterly foul shrieking cow for 10 days to 2 weeks of each month, worsening a lot in her early 40s and continuing until her v early 50s... she's 70 now and and utter delight, I'm not being sarcastic and it makes me sad to think of all those years for all her family blighted by her awful temper and mood swings)

Anyway, I fear that being me :(

Only thing I've found so far that helps is to keep track of my cycle so at least I can warn DH (seriously) and at least I have that to remind me what's going on when I'm suddenly exploding with rage about something tiny...

Less coffee and sugar is not a bad thing either.

Reading with interest.

MinnieMountain · 17/04/2020 21:17

I can't take HRT so my GP recommended evening primrose oil for hot flushes. It's actually really helping my moods.

Thisismyhappyface · 17/04/2020 21:19

Yep, citalopram 20mg. It has made life bearable for the whole family. Without it I am fine for 3 weeks a month, and then a monster. Honestly, it has changed my life.

Be careful with cerazette, one of the major side effects is depression and I definitely had that from taking it.

I take Agnus cactus and starflower oil with evening primrose oil and they help
