Bottle of cola open since Christmas - can I cook a ham in it?

Tesco own brand 2 litre bottle. Someone had a glass out of it at Christmas and put it back in the garage.

I want to make ham in coke and it's either that or Coke Zero which I don't think will work as no sugar.

Would you use the Christmas Coke or will it kill us???

It won't kill you, and the ham is already dead so it won't mind either.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 17/04/2020 14:10

If it doesn't have sweeteners I would use it.
If it does, I personally would not.
I think I might be the sweetener version of an anti vaxxer.

So maybe ignore me on that part?

It's full of citric acid and it is designed to last a long time.

SuperSharpShooter · 17/04/2020 14:11

Yes! It’s exactly what left over pop us for.

Why not?

ChikiTIKI · 17/04/2020 14:33

Taste it. If it tastes OK then use it. If you can't bring yourself to taste it because it's so old, then I wouldn't cook with it 🙂 will probably be fine though!

BarbaraofSeville · 17/04/2020 14:47

It will have gone flat but that doesn't matter for cooking and there's so much sugar in it that it's unlikely to have gone stale but there's no chance at all of the old flat coke 'killing anyone' unless there's allergies or extreme sugar sensitivity at play.

midnightstar66 · 17/04/2020 14:48

It will be fine, test it just in case to save ruining the ham if it has an odd flavour

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 17/04/2020 14:51

It will kill you! I doubt Peppa pig will mind either as it’s dead anyway

Sewrainbow · 17/04/2020 15:03

Don't make it in coke zero we tried that and it isnt as nice...

I doubt there would be anything wrong with using the bottle from Christmas.

muckycat · 17/04/2020 15:17

I'm sure it'll be fine! the sugar means it will be preserved for ages and it doesn't need to be fizzy for cooking. Agree with a quick taste test though, no point ruining a ham if it tastes manky

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 17/04/2020 16:20

No point tasting it. Supermarket cola tastes like shit anyway.

violetbunny · 17/04/2020 16:50

No, I wouldn't!

IHeartKingThistle · 17/04/2020 16:52

Well yes, it tastes like supermarket cola! Weirdly it was still quite fizzy! Anyway the ham is now in said cola and you're right, MN, it doesn't seem to mind Grin

AlwaysCheddar · 17/04/2020 16:52

Nope!

IHeartKingThistle · 17/04/2020 16:53

Oh FGS no one says no until the minute I use it?!?!

Oh well, it's done now! It's going to be cooked for 2 hours - surely that'll be fine!

OP posts:
TheRealCaroleBaskin · 17/04/2020 16:57

I'd use it, coke doesn't go 'off' really, just flat

OrganTransplant123 · 17/04/2020 17:00

It’ll be fine. Coke doesn’t go off.

That said, I checked an old thread yesterday to see whether I could use SR flour instead of plain in a white sauce, thread said no problem. I then made cauliflower cheese. The sauce split, and the cauliflower is too soft. Do not use SR flour in a béchamel sauce!

IPokeBadgers · 17/04/2020 17:02

Let us know how you get on....and if the end result passes the taste test - I have a hankering for ham now! 🐷

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 17/04/2020 21:36

No ones ever had food poisoning from out of date soft drinks. It'll be fine.

Sicario · 17/04/2020 22:09

Coca cola is one of the few things that will survive the apocalypse. That and cockroaches.

Clymene · 17/04/2020 22:10

Cola is sugar. It doesn't go off.

ParisInTheSpringtime · 17/04/2020 22:12

Oh I love a ham cooked in coke.
