We've had a noise pollution letter from the council!!!

We aren't big DIYers but February my husband fitted us a new kitchen, it took a whole month inbetween work and he always stopped any noise at 6pm.
Now we are doing some decking in the garden whilst on lockdown. Some sawing, sanding & banging again stops at 6pm.
A letter has just arrived warning us of noise pollution and excessive hammering, banging & use of power tools.

Our neighbour was really annoyed when we had our kitchen, they even recorded the noise it made one day but I tried to explain it was a one off and that's what happens when a new kitchen is being fitted.

Now we are quite shocked to receive the letter but don't know where we stand. Are we allowed to finish the decking or shall we not bother?!

So you just decided to break the rules spontaneously then. Doesn't improve things, really. You didn't even bother to make elementary checks before making spurious accusations of name changing.

JudyCoolibar · 17/04/2020 18:22

Should have made clear that that was directed to sleepingpup.

JudyCoolibar · 17/04/2020 18:24

Careful, TSSDNCOP, sleepingpup will accuse you of name changing in order to commit the dreadful crime of not liking decking.

@Dieu "If I was to do work of this nature, I would always approach my neighbours in advance, and mention it to them. That way it doesn't come as a surprise to anyone. I can't imagine going ahead without having given them a heads-up."

The OP did tell the neighbours in advance - RTFT

sleepingpup · 17/04/2020 18:25

no didn't even think about the rules or make checks Hmm

just thought " how nasty is that piling in and making the OP feel bad about her new deck she's building in a totally unrelated sneering comment"

Stuff your rules.

Yesterdayforgotten · 17/04/2020 18:25

It prob seems excessive because you're doing the decking right after the kitchen (essentially two big projects back to back.) It will be hard for your neighbour because it is lock down and they are stuck in with all the noise so I do feel for them as this is the worst time for this.

Yesterdayforgotten · 17/04/2020 18:27

2 hours a day is fine but all day would be a different matter.

Surprisedtosaytheleast · 17/04/2020 18:28

Sleeping pup is living and breathing corona.
She’s going to be bereft when the crisis is over! Anyone or any business doing anything non corona related is appalling. Grin

Raffathebear · 17/04/2020 18:28

Selfish timing to do your diys when people are stuck indoors. Pleased the council pulled their finger out. Sounds awful for your poor neighbours.

callmeadoctor · 17/04/2020 18:29

But OP maybe it would be kind and neighbourly to maybe limit work to mornings or something. Always pays to be neighbourly.

rainbow1982 · 17/04/2020 18:29

2 poxy hours noise a day and they complained? They sound like miserable scruffy old bastards with nothing better to do. Crack on quickly with the decking so it's finished before it escalates, they sound tragic and I don't think what you've done is excessive. If it was me and it bothered me I'd knock and ask if you could possibly switch times etc, not go to the council. It's probably the only excitement they get 🙄🙄🙄

@Surprisedtosaytheleast

say what? you've lost it and def haven't read the thread. I haven't even mentioned the word Corona. But crack on.

Ronnie27 · 17/04/2020 18:34

Do nothing, this all takes time and they will have to provide evidence etc by which time the work will be over. As long as you aren’t being unreasonable with your hours, a certain level of noise has to be expected when home improvements are being carried out. Some people just love a moan.

CalleighDoodle · 17/04/2020 18:34

My neighbours have ripped out their kitchen (which is currently on the front lawn and has been for weeks) and are currently renovating the downstairs of their house. They stop at 6pm. Ordinarily this wouldn't be an issue. But I'm wfm. Conference calls with that level of noise going on is a nightmare. Even just concentrating on work.

Anyway. They are a rat’s palace.

FrippEnos · 17/04/2020 18:35

@Stillmonday
Decking will take a few more days, maybe a week

This is the entirety of your problem.

Stop pissing around with it and get it finished.

sleepingpup · 17/04/2020 18:40

in order to commit the dreadful crime of not liking decking.

no nothing to do with not liking decking ,

not liking sneers and unkind ness. You said it.
It's all there to read.

@sleepingpup It's a common trend on here to be rude, it's like bashing your head against a brick wall trying to educate the ignorant 🤷🏻‍♀️

DesdemonaDryEyes · 17/04/2020 18:56

Decking is shit. HTH

Surprisedtosaytheleast · 17/04/2020 19:02

* During this national emergency if your Council waste their time persuing a complaint about you putting decking down after installing a kitchen, we really have things to worry about!*

Sleeping... you this afternoon on this very thread!

sleepingpup · 17/04/2020 19:20

obvs I meant they had MORE PRESSING life and death matters to deal with , like feeding people etc than dealing with neighbours griping over the sound of a drill going next door.

You missed my point entirely @Surprisedtosaytheleast but never mind

Surprisedtosaytheleast · 17/04/2020 19:24

Obvs Grin

isittooearlyforgin · 17/04/2020 19:27

Gosh! We did a large extension and it took 9 months. Neighbours very understanding. Likewise both sets of neighbours did extensions and we were understanding of them. A bit of neighbourly understanding (excessive noise withstanding) goes a long way and helps when the boot is on the other foot.

Viviennemary · 17/04/2020 19:27

Everyone needs a bit of peace and quiet at this stressful time. If your decking project takes a couple of days fine. But weeks of banging and hammering really isn't on.

sleepingpup · 17/04/2020 19:35

Balmytissues · 17/04/2020 21:02

Well this 'ignorant' lady ain't the one with a written warning about noise from the council...…. And I haven't even commented yet.

But you crack on with your DIY kitchen and decking and call the rest of us ignorant.

2 hours a day drilling/sawing/hammering would have me gone insane.
