Mirena coils, replacement ?

My coil is due for replacement next month.

With the current situation, any ideas if that is likely to happen or if it can stay in longer and not be an issue?

It can stay in but you would need to take extra precautions until it was removed e.g. condoms or get a pill prescribed. I had to take the mini pill alongside it as I needed it removing under GA (strings went awol) and there was a delay of a few months.

Eurgh, ok thanks .

There is evidence that the mirena lasts for up to 2 years longer than stated. Obviously you’ve got to weigh up the risk for you.

It can stay in if you are over 50 but otherwise social distancing in the bedroom would be required 😉

Mine is well out of date! Had an appointment at the start of all this and had to cancel because DD2 developed a cough. With the kids around 24/7 social distancing is going fine!

Dickorydockwhatthe · 17/04/2020 15:25

Mines well out of date however my periods haven't returned yet so guessing its still working 😬

viatormundi · 17/04/2020 15:36

When mine was replaced it was a couple of months overdue. The doctor told me that in Spain they are licensed for 7 years rather than 5 years like the UK.

I work in sexual health. We aren't doing coil replacement appointments at the moment (only very urgent face to face appointments). But as others said, it's fine to leave it in. Just be careful if you don't want to get pregnant. It doesn't just magically stop working the day after a replacement is due, but it could start to work less well. Better safe than sorry.

I literally had an appointment for mine to be replaced on day of lockdown. Appointment was cancelled by Drs. Mine has been in 5 and a half years, get very occasional bleeds (very light once every three months or so) for the last year or so. I'm almost 47.

InvisibleToEveryone · 17/04/2020 16:33

I'm 40.
I mean how are you meant to know if it's stopped working??!Confused

Ok...well erm, social distancing, that'll go down well Grin

Phone your gp. See what they suggest. Condoms or pills probably easiest

Aaah I got a call from the Sexual Health clinic just this morning about this!

It was from a doc who noticed my appointment had been cancelled and wanted to check I was either happy to "Social - distance" or receive the mini-pill from them or free condoms posted direct to my house.
She said that there are trials afoot to have it licensed for 6 years rather than 5 (I had asked her if I should expect my period to return and she's said probably not for a good while yet)
She also said if you go on the website (Sandyford where I am) there's a link to request for condoms posted out during lockdown.

Topseyt · 17/04/2020 17:14

I'm just really regretting that I didn't push to have mine removed back in February when I really wanted to and had realised that it was a mistake to allow it to be put in (in December).

I feel stuck with the fucker now.

QuimJongUn · 17/04/2020 18:07

I was due to have my mirena changed this month but my clinic has suspended pretty much all services. However they've put this on their website, which might put a few minds at rest (including mine!).

Mirena coils, replacement ?
InvisibleToEveryone · 17/04/2020 18:54

@QuimJongUn , thanks for that.

I'd read that they "should" last longer with no ill effects, but who wants to be the test group for that??!! Us apparently!
